The aim of this retrospective study (2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011) was to examine mammary tumors and tumor-like lesions in 24 pet rabbits by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Rabbits were aged 2 to 8 years. Seventeen were female and 7 female-spayed. Diagnosed tumor-like lesions were lobular hyperplasia (2 rabbits) and multiple cysts (10 rabbits). Tumors included cystadenoma (7 tumors; 3 rabbits), intraductal papilloma (2 tumors; 1 rabbit), intraductal papillary carcinoma (1 tumor), adenocarcinoma (14 tumors; 13 rabbits), adenosquamous carcinoma (2 tumors; 2 rabbits), and matrix-producing carcinoma (1 tumor). The most frequently diagnosed lesion was invasive carcinoma (n ¼ 17). Ten rabbits had several lesions. Immunohistochemistry for calponin and p63 showed that the diagnosed tumor-like lesions, benign tumors, and noninvasive carcinoma had a peripheral myoepithelial layer that was lacking in the invasive carcinomas. In 13 of 14 (93%) of the invasive carcinomas, however, there were variable numbers of calponin-and/or p63-immunopositive cells ranging from 0.1% to 40% with morphological features of either retained nonneoplastic myoepithelial cells or neoplastic epithelial cells with a myoepithelial differentiation. Tumor recurrence was reported in the rabbit with the matrix-producing carcinoma and in 3 rabbits with mammary adenocarcinomas displaying !20 mitotic figures in 10 high-power fields and high numbers of neoplastic cells with a myoepithelial differentiation (19%-39%). The rabbit with the matrix-producing mammary carcinoma developed cutaneous metastases confirmed by histopathology. This study shows that different types of mammary tumor-like lesions and tumors can occur in pet rabbits. Keywords immunohistochemistry, mammary gland, tumors and tumor-like lesions, myoepithelial cells, rabbitThe most common tumor of the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is the uterine adenocarcinoma, 20 whereas mammary tumors and tumor-like lesions are rarely reported in pet and laboratory rabbits. In a study of uterine disorders in 59 rabbits, the concurrent presence of a uterine and a mammary gland adenocarcinoma was observed in 4 rabbits, 2 of which had endometrial hyperplasia as well. 28 In another investigation of 47 rabbits with uterine disorders, mammary gland disease including cystic lesions was diagnosed in 15 of these rabbits by physical examination. 24Histopathological features of neoplastic and nonneoplastic proliferative lesions of the mammary gland of rabbits are described in only a few publications that relate to laboratory rabbits. 11,26 In a breeding colony of rabbits, most invasive and noninvasive neoplasms developed in mammary glands with preexisting cystic disease.11 A cystic mammary adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in a 44-month-old female nulliparous New Zealand White laboratory rabbit with concurrent mammary hyperplasia and dysplasia and elevated prolactin levels due to a pituitary adenoma. 26 To the authors' knowledge, a detailed histopathological and immunohistochemical character...
Cerebellar malformations can be inherited or caused by insults during cerebellar development. To date, only sporadic cases of cerebellar malformations have been reported in dogs, and the genetic background has remained obscure. Therefore, this study`s objective was to describe the clinical characteristics, imaging features and pedigree data of a familial cerebellar hypoplasia in purebred Eurasier dogs. A uniform cerebellar malformation characterized by consistent absence of the caudal portions of the cerebellar vermis and, to a lesser degree, the caudal portions of the cerebellar hemispheres in association with large retrocerebellar fluid accumulations was recognized in 14 closely related Eurasier dogs. Hydrocephalus was an additional feature in some dogs. All dogs displayed non-progressive ataxia, which had already been noted when the dogs were 5 – 6 weeks old. The severity of the ataxia varied between dogs, from mild truncal sway, subtle dysmetric gait, dysequilibrium and pelvic limb ataxia to severe cerebellar ataxia in puppies and episodic falling or rolling. Follow-up examinations in adult dogs showed improvement of the cerebellar ataxia and a still absent menace response. Epileptic seizures occurred in some dogs. The association of partial vermis agenesis with an enlarged fourth ventricle and an enlarged caudal (posterior) fossa resembled a Dandy-Walker-like malformation in some dogs. Pedigree analyses were consistent with autosomal recessive inheritance.
Thirty-five calves were delivered by caesarean section near to term. During the operation amniotic fluid was collected for determination of the lecithin/sphingomyelin (L/S) ratio. Clinical examination of the calves and analysis of blood gas concentration (venous blood) were carried out within the first hour of life. Fifteen out of 35 calves under examination did not show clinical or blood gas disorders in the course of the first hour of life. In these calves, the L/S ratio, which represents a measure for the maturity of the surfactant system, averaged 2.6. The other 20 calves, however, developed a respiratory distress syndrome together with a progressive respiratory and metabolic acidosis within the first hour of life. The L/S ratio in the animals affected with respiratory distress syndrome reached an average value of 1.5 which was significantly below that of the calves not suffering from respiratory distress. Eleven of the 20 calves which developed respiratory distress syndrome died within the first 60 hours of life. The most striking findings in the post mortem examinations of these animals were intracranial haemorrhages and pulmonary lesions (hyaline membranes, interstitial and alveolar oedema). On the basis of the significantly lower L/S ratio and the post mortem findings, it is to be assumed that the respiratory distress syndrome in calves, equally with that in infants, is attributable to a surfactant deficiency.
A 4-year-old male German Hunting Terrier presented with tremor, dyspnea, trismus, spasms of the musculature of the larynx and pharynx, and hypothermia and subsequently died despite intensive clinical care. Prior clinical signs included vomitus and diarrhea. Microscopic examination of the brain revealed a multifocal nonsuppurative brain stem encephalitis; a few intralesional neurons contained intranuclear inclusions. By immunohistochemistry, Aujeszky disease virus (Suid herpesvirus 1) antigen was detected in neurons in the brain and in ganglion cells of the trigeminal ganglia. Viral culture of brain tissue confirmed the presence of Aujeszky disease virus. Histopathologic findings in the brain with the identification of Aujeszky disease virus by immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction are consistent with Aujeszky disease virus-induced encephalitis. Sequencing revealed a 100% homology of the isolated Aujeszky disease virus with Aujeszky disease virus isolates of wild boar from Eastern Germany.
Gelatin-dialdehyde glue is able to produce the same effects in the area of the aortic wall as the substantially more toxic gelatin-resorcinol-formaldehyde glue and thus could be recommended for clinical trials for treating acute aortic dissections thus far yielding excellent initial results.
Abstract. This study aims to investigate the expression of metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) in chronic doxorubicin cardiomyopathy in a rabbit model and to evaluate the effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation in this disease. Thirtynine 3-month-old New Zealand rabbits were divided into 4 groups: group 1 (n 5 9) was the untreated control. Groups 2-4 were treated with 6 weeks of doxorubicin (3 mg/kg). Group 2 (n 5 6) received no further treatment. In group 3 (n 5 9), animals were treated with culture medium (CM) alone. In group 4 (n 5 15), autologous MSCs (1.5-2.0 3 10 6 /ml) were injected in the left ventricular (LV) wall. Hearts were stained with HE and picrosirius red. MMP-1, -2, -3 and -9 and TIMP-2 and -3 were detected immunohistochemically. The mRNA levels were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results confirmed that doxorubicin treatment resulted in minimal myocardial fibrosis and showed that expression of MMPs increased and TIMP-3 decreased. The injection procedure resulted in increased myocardial fibrosis in groups 3 and 4. After MSC injection, MMP-1, MMP-2, and TIMP-3 expression was higher than that in group 2. CM injection led to more fibrosis, elevated TIMP-3, but diminished MMP-1 and MMP-2 expression compared with MSC injection. The mRNA levels of MMPs and TIMPs were not significantly different among all groups. In conclusion, chronic doxorubicin cardiomyopathy was characterized by increased MMP and decreased TIMP-3 expression. MSCs injection into the LV resulted in marked differences of collagen content and MMP/TIMP expression in the whole heart, although significant numbers of living MSCs were not detected after 4 weeks.
