The case records of 106 persons charged with murder and referred to the authors for psychiatric assessment between 1974 and 1984 were examined and a 140-item questionnaire completed. Political murderers were found to be generally more stable than non-political murderers. Significant differences also emerged in the recommendations made by defence and prosecution psychiatrists.
The period of the study was from August 15th to the end of September, 1969. Severe rioting occurred in Belfast on the nights of 14th and 15th August, and during the next few weeks rioting, arson, looting and intimidation continued. Eight fatal casualties were recorded and a large number of people were injured, mainly from gunshot wounds.
