Esta pesquisa objetivou descrever o acesso ao diagnóstico da tuberculose na Atenção Primária à Saúde. Os sujeitos foram pacientes com diagnóstico de tuberculose em situação de internação hospitalar. Os dados foram produzidos através de um formulário voltado para a caracterização dos pacientes e de uma entrevista semi-estruturada com as seguintes questões: Como você descobriu que estava com tuberculose? Como foi o acesso aos exames que diagnosticaram a doença? A análise dos dados foi quantitativa frequencial para os dados obtidos no formulário, e para a entrevista semi-estruturada foi aplicada a análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Identificou-se que o primeiro nível de assistência procurado por 57% dos pacientes foram as unidades de Atenção Primária à Saúde; quanto ao diagnóstico da doença, para 43% dos pacientes ele foi realizado em alguma clínica privada não conveniada com o SUS; o mesmo percentual teve o diagnóstico confirmado no serviço especializado em doenças infectocontagiosas e em algum serviço de pronto atendimento. Em apenas 14% dos casos o diagnóstico aconteceu na APS. O acesso ao diagnóstico da tuberculose na Atenção Primária à Saúde encontra-se deficiente, o que contribui para que o tratamento seja retardado e a disseminação da doença não seja contida.
