RESUMO Polímeros hidrorretentores baseados em acrilamida são utilizados na agricultura para aumentar a retenção de água em solos, e o elevado custo e a baixa biodegradabilidade podem ser aspectos negativos quanto à disseminação do uso desse produto. O presente trabalho avaliou hidrorretentores experimentais feitos com cascas de laranja, maracujá e café, materiais de baixo custo e elevada biodegradabilidade. Os materiais experimentais foram caracterizados quanto à capacidade de absorção e reabsorção de água, assim como a retenção de água desses materiais misturados com solo natural. A capacidade de absorção dos hidrorretentores de laranja e maracujá foi de 12,5 g.g−1, e do de café, 6,6 g.g−1, enquanto o hidrorretentor de acrilamida (usado para comparação) apresentou capacidade de absorção igual a 293 g.g−1. Diferentemente do hidrorretentor de acrilamida, os hidrorretentores experimentais apresentaram baixa capacidade de reabsorção de água. Os hidrorretentores de laranja e maracujá proporcionaram significativa elevação na retenção de água em solos naturais para um período de até 32 dias após a aplicação dos hidrorretentores, enquanto o material de café fez o mesmo por um período de até 24 dias. Os hidrorretentores produzidos com cascas de frutas apresentaram potencialidade para serem utilizados como condicionadores de solo de ação relativamente breve.
