La tamización o cribado es la acción de examinar un grupo de personas para separar aquellos sanos de los que tienen una condición patológica oculta o alto riesgo de padecerla, mediante pruebas diagnósticas o criterios clínicos. En cáncer se utiliza para reconocer una patología específica en una población asintomática o para reconocer patologías precursoras de neoplasias que permitan establecer programas de seguimiento, detectando las neoplasias en fases tempranas, a fin de mejorar el pronóstico y, por ende, la sobrevida de los pacientes. En Colombia -por ser el cáncer gástrico la primera causa de mortalidad por cáncer- es muy importante definir los métodos más adecuados para una tamización de este tipo de cáncer. Para las poblaciones con alta incidencia en cáncer gástrico, la endoscopia digestiva es hoy el examen de elección para su tamización; es probable que en el futuro lo sean los estudios moleculares en biopsia líquida.
