Colistin appears to be as safe and as effective as other antimicrobials for treatment of sepsis caused by Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas in critically ill patients.
Furuncular myiasis occurs after larvae penetrate on the skin. The disease is
characterized by the presence of a nodule with a central hole through which
there is serosanguinous exudate drainage. The authors present a case of
furuncular myiasis by Dermatobia hominis in which late diagnosis made it
necessary to have the orifice margins surgically enlarged in order to extract
the larva. They also emphasize that dermoscopy is a useful auxiliary tool in
this diagnosis.
American cutaneous leishmaniasis is in full geographic expansion in Brazil and it is considered among the infectious and parasitic diseases of utmost importance worldwide, not only by its frequency, but mainly by therapeutic difficulties, deformities and sequelae that may result. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, the first autochthonous case of American cutaneous leishmaniasis was registered by Rabello in 1913. The authors report two cases of the disease in the region around the Cemetery São Francisco Xavier, in the Caju neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro city, and emphasize the need for actions that aim to early diagnosis and treatment of American cutaneous leishmaniasis cases.
Sialolithiasis is the presence of calculus within the ductal system of a salivary
gland. Among the diagnostic methods are inspection, palpation, checking the amount of
saliva secreted and the identification of a sialolith. The authors present the case
of a 37-year-old female patient with edema of the submandibular area and a bulging
sublingual caruncle due to a calculus that obstructed the salivary gland ostium.
Venomous animals are those that, by means of a hunting and defense mechanism, are able to inject their prey with a toxic substance produced in their bodies, directly from specialized glands (e.g., tooth, sting, spur) through which the poison passes. Millipedes are poisonous animals; they can be harmful to humans, and their effects usually manifest as erythematous, purpuric, and cyanotic lesions; local pain; and paresthesia. Here, we report a case of skin contact with a millipede for 6h resulting in skin lesions similar to blue toe syndrome.
Manual monitoring of animal behavior is time-consuming and prone to bias. An alternative to such limitations is the use of computational resources in behavioral assessments, such as a tracking system, to facilitate accurate and long-term evaluations. There is a demand for robust software that addresses analysis in heterogeneous environments (such as in field conditions) and evaluates multiple individuals in groups while maintaining their identities. The Ethoflow software was developed using computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to automatically monitor various behavioral parameters. A state-of-the-art object detection algorithm based on instance segmentation was implemented, allowing behavior monitoring in the field under heterogeneous environments. Moreover, a convolutional neural network was implemented to assess complex behaviors, thus expanding the possibilities of animal behavior analyses. The heuristics used to automatically generate training data for the AI models are described, and the models trained with these datasets exhibited high accuracy in detecting individuals in heterogeneous environments and assessing complex behavior. Ethoflow was employed for kinematic assessments and to detect trophallaxis in social bees. The software runs on the Linux, Microsoft Windows, and IOS operating systems with an intuitive graphical interface. In the Ethoflow algorithm, the processing with AI is separate from the other modules, which facilitates kinematic measurements on an ordinary computer and the assessment of complex behavior on machines with graphics processing units (GPUs). Thus, Ethoflow is a useful support tool for applications in biology and related fields.
