Devido ao crescimento da população, a contaminação dos ecossistemas subsuperficiais com compostos orgânicos oriundos das indústrias é um problema persistente e crescente no mundo. Em contrapartida, organismos que estão disponíveis naturalmente no ambiente são elementos importantes na fitorremediação. Diante disso, este artigo teve como objetivo discutir os principais conceitos acerca da interação entre plantas e microrganismos, destacando a importância na fitorremediação na remoção de poluentes. As atividades de remediação dos hidrocarbonetos pelos microrganismos (isoladamente ou em consórcio) foram exploradas neste estudo, a fim de identificar linhagens de bactérias com melhor eficiência. A pesquisa destaca também que o estudo do microbioma da rizosfera e da endosfera são componentes dos processos de fitorremediação. Foram abordados os avanços das técnicas moleculares modernas que levam à evolução das tecnologias ômicas utilizando moléculas de ácidos nucleicos para estudar associação entre planta e microrganismo e sua importância nos sistemas de fitorremediação para biodegradação de hidrocarboneto. Conclui-se que estudos envolvendo fitorremediação são de grande relevância, uma vez que podem resultar em uma alternativa efetiva para a descontaminação de ambientes impactados e contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável.
