En 1949 el estreno de la película británica Christopher Columbus y la indecorosa representación del rey Fernando el Católico provocó una airada reacción oficial encabezada por la Institución Fernando el Católico y la Diputación Provincial de Zaragoza. Al mismo tiempo, una corriente de solidaridad e indignación animó a cientos de ciudadanos corrientes a enviar escritos de adhesión en defensa del honor ultrajado del rey, pero también de su región y su patria.La posibilidad de acceder a esta fuente en gran medida excepcional -tanto por la naturaleza privada de este tipo de registros, como por su carácter inicialmente ajeno al tradicional archivo del historiador- permite auscultar las vivencias de la nación en la España franquista, incidiendo en las emociones vinculadas a la exaltación nacionalista y a la propia experiencia individual del pasado nacional. Al mismo tiempo, las adhesiones evidencian la importancia de los espacios subnacionales en la conformación de la identidad histórica del franquismo, dentro de la categoría que se ha venido a denominar regionalismo franquista.
