Increased political tension in Latin America is largely due to the expansionist tendencies of their states. Disputes in Central America are threatening peace and democratic consolidation. A case in point is the Gulf of Fonseca, known for the discrepancies in border demarcations faced by three states: Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador, area of great strategic interest for the future of the three countries involved. Visits were made to several coastal communities of the Gulf in order to conduct interviews with local actors and coastal residents and thus understand from their own perspectives on geopolitical, environmental and social processes in the area of study. Currently in the Gulf of Fonseca, cross-border cooperation, supported by cooperatives, NGOs and the fundamental role of the local population, prevails over bi-national or tri-national cooperation. Growth in the number of cooperatives and informal groups linked to cross-border cooperation is a consequence of climate change in the area, the groups' ability to adapt, lack of state support and food insecurity. Other conflicts arise from the political conflict that arises in the gulf. The conflict is over cooperation. Keywords: Political geography, Gulf of Fonseca, borders, conflicts, actors. Recibido: 16/7/2015 / Aprobado: 12/4/2016The Gulf of Fonseca, rather than political conflict.
