Kalium, Rubidium und Cäsium wirken auf Kohlenstoff in Form von Graphit, Ruß und aktiver Kohle lebhaft ein. Die Einwirkung gibt sich kund durch den Zerfall der verwendeten Kohlenstoffmaterialien und durch Wärmeentwicklung. Es können Produkte isoliert werden, deren Zusammensetzung für bestimmte Gebiete von Druck und Temperatur praktisch konstant ist. Die gebundene Alkalimetallmenge ändert sich etwa im Verhältnis von 1:2:4; oder 1 Mol Alkalimetall wird gebunden von etwa 16 oder 8 oder 4 Mol Kohlenstoff. Hierbei ist die letzte, der völligen Benetzung entsprechende Stufe am wenigsten abgegrenzt.

Es wurde die Abgabe des Fluorwasserstoffs aus Kaliumbifluoridschmelzen untersucht und gefunden, daß Kaliumbifluorid das erste Drittel seines HF‐Gehaltes bei allmählich ansteigender Temperatur, den Rest aber bei konstanter Temperatur (etwa 504°) abgibt. Die Schmelze ist alsdann an Kaliumfluorid gesättigt, das als Bodenkörper abgeschieden wird. Durch Überwachung der Temperatur der Schmelze und der Heizstromstärke kann man die HF‐Abgabe in beliebiger Weise regeln.
