The analysis of hemp cultivation and usage trends in the world and Europe shows that hemp cultivation and processing in Latvia has good perspectives. This paper presents the results of a first study about the usage of pectinase enzyme Beisol PRO (4% water solution) for Latvian hemp sort "Purini" retting at different time and temperatures conditions and treatment influence on obtained fibres quality. Gravimetrical examination of the quantity of fibres and sheaves after retting, physical-mechanical tests and TG analysis, colour properties, and selected samples microscopy evaluation show that enzyme treatment is not significant for fibre separation from stem as well as TG characteristics at investigated time and temperature conditions. Use of pectinase enzyme for hemp retting in some cases increases tensile strength of fibres and causes changes of colour characteristics.
Each year more and more people focus on healthy, ecological and environmental-friendly living. Environmentally friendly lifestyle doesn’t mean that we are using only natural products, but attention is pointed to the manufacturing and production process also. The rapid development of recycled and biodegradable products causes expanding usage of hemp fibers both in household and technical textiles. The analysis of hemp cultivation and usage trends in the world and Europe shows that hemp cultivation and processing in Latvia has good perspectives. Product quality is influenced by raw materials. In this case it is hemp fiber descriptive characteristics. Hemp fibers are natural fibers and their properties varies according to plant growing regional climatic conditions, amount of manure, plant density, harvesting time and pre-treatment technological processes. There are studied the influence of above mentioned factors on chemical composition, geometrical and physical properties of the Latvian hemp fiber both local and foreign cultivars. The work was carried out in cooperation between Riga Technical University, Textile Technology and Design Institute and the Agriculture Science Centre of Latgale.
Use of hemp fibre is rapidly increasing in Europe. This tendency is related to carbon and glass fibre substitution with recycled and biodegradable raw materials for use in car production. Scientists and manufacturers work to obtain new composite materials where hemp fibre will be as reinforcement. Hemp fibres are light and with high tensile strength comparing with other technical fibres. Advantage – eco–friendly utilization possibilities. The research work to determine hemp fibre efficiency was carried out for two years at the Latgale Agricultural Research Centre. In this work different hemp fibre varieties were used. To determine the most suitable varieties for Latvian climatic conditions all the varieties were tested at the laboratories of Riga Technical University, Institute of Textile Material Technologies and Design. We are looking for new possibilities to make technical textile samples from different hemp fibre varieties. In cooperation with Laboratories of the Scientific Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR” the amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in different variety cannabis plants were determined. It was concluded that amount of THC of different open–air cultivation varieties grown in Latvia is different but anyway this amount is much below the acceptable norm.
In this research an effect of a flame-retardant coating with antimony trioxide (Sb2O3), commercial printing pastes Printperfec EX-TS, Tubvinyl 235MC and a pigment Bezaprint ROT KF onto a raw linen fabric and a bleached linen fabric has investigated. After the coating 5 washing cycles were applied to half of the fabrics. The burning test of the raw and the bleached linen fabrics and those coated with commercial printing pastes and antimony trioxide, as well as the washed fabrics was accomplished. The results of the test show, that the raw and the bleached linen fabric burns completely. The flame extinction was observed for coated fabrics and coated washed fabrics.
For a variety of applications it is desirable to produce textile materials with specially designed properties. Reinforcing 2D and 3D woven structures for fibers reinforced polymer composites were developed from renewable natural fibers and tested in this research work. Results and discussion are presented in the paper.
