Die großen Kirchen in Deutschland tragen über rein religiöse Funktionen hinaus durch ihre parochiale Verankerung schon immer vielfältige Aktivitäten für das Zusammenleben in Stadtteilen und Dörfern bei. Neu ist, dass sie ihren diesbezüglichen Beitrag bewusst gestalten und zur Entwicklung der Zivilgesellschaft beitragen wollen. Dabei treffen sie sich mit sozialarbeiterischen Sozialraum-Konzepten. Diese Situation wird zunächst allgemein (1), dann im kirchlich-theologischen Diskurs dargestellt (2) und mit Beispielen aus der Praxis und neueren Forschungsergebnissen konkretisiert (3). Ein Fazit (4) bilanziert den Organisationswandel der Kirchen von staatsanalogen Institutionen zu zivilgesellschaftlichen Akteurinnen mit dem Ende überkommener Kirchlichkeit.
