High FSS is associated with a current partnership and with a higher cumulative time of abstinence through close professional supervision. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of social relationships in alcohol-dependent patients would probably help to improve treatment outcome in the future.
This study supports the position that the experience of an acetaldehyde reaction is not necessary for disulfiram's action and does not lead to a better treatment outcome. Hence, there is no evidence for the necessity of a test drink before the initiation of a supervised disulfiram therapy.
Although case observations should be interpreted with caution, the present results suggest that disulfiram is safe and efficient in supervised long-term treatment of alcohol-dependent patients.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
