Floor finishing materials such as floor coverings and floor mats can reduce floor impact noise easily. When an impact was applied to the floor, its finishing material is deformed and the impact force that was applied to the concrete slab is changed. The softer finishing materials were, the more impact force decreased. An experimental study was performed using 14 PVC floor coverings and 16 floor mats to capture the characteristics of impact force and impact noise in the residential buildings.
Evaluation on the environmental noise is carried out by surveying subjective response of residents with physical measurement of noise during long period in field. Particularly field survey is used to make regulations from the analysis on how many people are annoyed for specific noise level, and laboratory test used to analyze the relationship between physical parameters of noise and subjective responses. In the laboratory controlling the variables is easy but the results could be biased because the condition in room would be different with field. Most of all noise exposure time is considered to be different with real situation, and this study aimed to evaluate the subjective response by exposure time of transportation noise, by applying three kinds of variable how much they give effects on the annoyance as the exposure time is operating condition, windows type and sound level. As a result there was somewhat difference between operating type and annoyance, which is caused by the sound characteristics operated in different condition. However the window type didn't give much effect to the annoyance as much as sound type. This means that the subjective response could give similar result by exposure time even for different window types. Most of all, the main factor affecting subjective response is considered to be the sound level and the exposure time.
Environmental noise in the residential area is appeared with different types and features along with the growth of society. In particular when the economic level is raised up, the demand of residents for the environmental noise becomes more sensitive. The existing research on the environmental noise was initiated in the 1980's and resulted that the children's jumping sound was most annoying among the noises transmitted from the other unit. This result caused such activities that the researches were focused on the floor impact noise and that the laws in relation to environmental noise within residential area were revised strictly. This study aimed to survey the consciousness of residents for the environmental noise and to see how it is changed comparing with the previous one.
In Korea, resilient materials such as EPS and EVA are used to reduce the floor impact sound between adjacent houses in apartment. With the revision of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOTT) Notice, new apartment buildings are required to construct concrete slabs of 210 mm or more and to ensure floor construction with impact insulation performance within 4th grades. However, most of the apartment buildings approved by the government prior to the enactment of the related laws in 2004 are usually constructed with a slab thickness of 120--150 mm, causing disputes and complaints over floor impact sound. This study investigated the mechanical properties like as dynamic stiffness, loss factor, compressibility, dimensional stability, etc., of resilient materials for remodeling of aged apartments. About 200 kinds of resilient materials and structures applied in commonly in recently 3 years were selected and investigated. Because of notification revision including compressibility and dimensional stability, dynamic stiffness of resilient materials was increased and lots of composite layer resilient structures were developed. In addition, it is necessary to develop a resilient materials or structures that can reduce the total thickness of floor structure because the aged apartment has low indoor height.
