ABSTRACTThe objective of this study is to characterize the ways in which teachers exercise authority, and to examine the relationship between types of authority and students' socioeconomic status (SES). Classes from 18 secondary teachers, who had been previously recognized by their students as exhibiting more authority than other teachers, were observed. Requests from the teachers, their topics, and the strategies used to accomplish students accepting the request were analyzed; the study uses qualitative techniques and statistical descriptions. Results show the existence of three types of pedagogical authority: 'Explicit authority', highly directive and focused on academic contents; 'shared authority', in which the teacher shares power with the students, focused as well in academic contents; and 'moral authority', highly directive and focused on the moral guidance of students. The first and the third one are especially manifested in low SES, while the second is often seen more in middle and low SES.Key words: pedagogical authority, teacher-student interaction, secondary education, learning environment.

School education requires the guidance, orientation and conduction of a teaching staff that is responsible for their students' development. This is why educating implies asymmetry and hierarchy, that is, pedagogical authority. However, today's societies are decreasingly hierarchical, and subjects are more critical of authority. In a sociocultural context in which the classical forms of authority are weakening, young education students have to construct new meanings which they find coherent and effective. With the goal of exploring the new understandings of pedagogical authority, a study was conducted of 913 education students in different Spanish-speaking countries: Chile, Colombia, Venezuela and Spain. The multinational analysis enabled us to identify crosscutting meanings, as well as local understandings constructed by the education students in today's society. A questionnaire with both closed and open-ended questions was administered. The overall results indicate that viewing authority grounded in reciprocal respect between teachers and students cuts across the participants and is significantly associated with the teaching of academic knowledge.
AbstractThis article presents the results of a research project on pedagogical authority in lower middle-class schools of Santiago, Chile. Specifically, it is qualitative analysis of the information gathered through individual in depth interviews, conducted with teachers of the south sector of Santiago, during the first semester of 2008. The meaning of the pedagogical authority for the teachers constitutes the object of this study. We treat the pedagogical authority as a social phenomenon situated culturally and historically. The sense of a social phenomenon for a subject is based on his existential experience in the here and now. Consequently, the authority analyzed in this research does not refer to a pure or abstract concept, but to a construction in interaction.
