Este artículo indaga en la influencia del aislamiento geográfico en la vida social, cultural y económica de los habitantes de Puerto Gala, región insular del sur de Chile (Aysén), centrándose principalmente en la construcción del espacio en su dimensión simbólica, económica y política. A partir de la concepción local del espacio se establecen los procesos histórico-sociales subyacentes en la construcción particular que estos pescadores hacen de la insularidad, vinculando los procesos locales con las dinámicas de la economía mundial y la intervención del estado chileno en la zona.
En el marco de un encuentro pluridisciplinar sobre etnografía realizado en 2017 en la Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano3, UAHC, emergió una pregunta que resulta fundamental rescatar para abrir este dossier. Por simple que parezca, el cuestionamiento trataba sobre qué nos reúne hoy en día, qué nos hace convivir, compartir recursos y vivir en común. Nos preguntamos qué respuestas es posible aportar desde las ciencias sociales y cómo producir esas respuestas.
In the framework of a multidisciplinary meeting on ethnography held in 2017 at Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano in Chile, there was a question essential to open this dossier. That question was about what brings us together today, what makes us live together, sharing resources and being together. We reflect about possible answers from social sciences and on how to produce those answers. Ethnography undoubtedly seems to be the primary tool to study the "living," the permanence and in situ observation of the researcher. Practicing ethnography implies collaboration. It is considered as a technique of coupling instead of imitation that assumes the impossibility of confusing with the others as well as the intervention of the researcher in the observed communities: we are not neutral, we participate in that sharing; we are not omniscient narrators of life in society because we are a part. Por simples que pareça, o questionamento tratava sobre o que nos reúne hoje, o que nos faz conviver, compartilhar recursos e viver em comum.
