Durante tres años, se realizaron colectas y observaciones de campo y de laboratorio, con el fin de evaluar, de manera general, el efecto directo o indirecto que podrían tener los cultivares Bt, algodonero y maíz, sobre los enemigos naturales de las principales plagas de estos dos cultivos: el Heliothis virescens y el Spodoptera frugiperda. Se analizaron las poblaciones tanto de depredadores como de parasitoides, con el resultado esperado: las toxinas de Bt, el Cry1Ac y el Cry1Ab, incorporado respectivamente en el algodonero Bollgard® y el hibrido de maíz Yieldgard®, no ejercen efecto directo sobre las poblaciones de los insectos benéficos estudiados. La disminución de sus poblaciones, ya sea en los lotes comerciales sembradas con cultivos Bt como en los convencionales, se atribuye a la merma de presas y de huéspedes a causa de aplicaciones de insecticidas contra insectos plagas no controladas con los cultivares transformados y al control del H. virescens y S. frugiperda por las toxinas respectivas, incorporadas al algodonero y maíz. Se concluye que, si esta tendencia de disminución de determinadas especies de insectos benéficos continúa también en los lotes convencionales o “refugios”, el depredador coccinélido Cycloneda y los parasitoides Cardiochiles y Meteorus, se deben considerar especies en peligro de vía de extinción, más aún si en el futuro se implementará el empleo de la segunda generación de cultivares transgénicos.
