Soil organisms provide crucial ecosystem services that support human life. However, little is known about their diversity, distribution, and the threats affecting them. Here, we compiled a global dataset of 60 sampled earthworm communities from over 7000 sites in 56 countries to predict patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We identify the environmental drivers shaping these patterns. Local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, while biomass peaked in the tropics, patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. Similar to many aboveground taxa, climate variables were more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat 65 cover. These findings highlight that, while the environmental drivers are similar, conservation strategies to conserve aboveground biodiversity might not be appropriate for earthworm diversity, especially in a changing climate.
BackgroundSchwannomatosis is a disease characterized by multiple non-vestibular schwannomas. Although biallelic NF2 mutations are found in schwannomas, no germ line event is detected in schwannomatosis patients. In contrast, germline mutations of the SMARCB1 (INI1) tumor suppressor gene were described in familial and sporadic schwannomatosis patients.MethodsTo delineate the SMARCB1 gene contribution, the nine coding exons were sequenced in a series of 56 patients affected with a variable number of non-vestibular schwannomas.ResultsNine variants scattered along the sequence of SMARCB1 were identified. Five of them were classified as deleterious. All five patients carrying a SMARCB1 mutation had more multiple schwannomas, corresponding to 10.2% of patients with schwannomatosis. They were also diagnosed before 35 years of age.ConclusionsThese results suggest that patients with schwannomas have a significant probability of carrying a SMARCB1 mutation. Combined with data available from other studies, they confirm the clinical indications for genetic screening of the SMARCB1 gene.
The restoration and reforestation of 12 million hectares of forests by 2030 are amongst the leading mitigation strategies for reducing carbon emissions within the Brazilian Nationally Determined Contribution targets assumed under the Paris Agreement. Understanding the dynamics of forest cover, which steeply decreased between 1985 and 2018 throughout Brazil, is essential for estimating the global carbon balance and quantifying the provision of ecosystem services. To know the long-term increment, extent, and age of secondary forests is crucial; however, these variables are yet poorly quantified. Here we developed a 30-m spatial resolution dataset of the annual increment, extent, and age of secondary forests for Brazil over the 1986-2018 period. Land-use and land-cover maps from MapBiomas Project (Collection 4.1) were used as input data for our algorithm, implemented in the Google Earth Engine platform. This dataset provides critical spatially explicit information for supporting carbon emissions reduction, biodiversity, and restoration policies, enabling environmental science applications, territorial planning, and subsidizing environmental law enforcement.
Aim: Macroinvertebrates comprise a highly diverse set of taxa with great potential as indicators of soil quality. Communities were sampled at 3,694 sites distributed worldwide. We aimed to analyse the patterns of abundance, composition and network characteristics and their relationships to latitude, mean annual temperature and rainfall, land cover, soil texture and agricultural practices.Location: Sites are distributed in 41 countries, ranging from 55° S to 57° N latitude, from 0 to 4,000 m in elevation, with annual rainfall ranging from 500 to >3,000 mm and mean temperatures of 5-32°C.
Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a viabilidade do uso de águas residuárias provenientes de um sistema biológico de tratamento de esgotos domésticos como alternativa à fertirrigação convencional de viveiros florestais, visando à produção de mudas de Eucalyptus grandis via subirrigação contínua. As variáveis avaliadas foram: altura, diâmetro do coleto, peso da matéria seca da parte aérea e da raiz, área foliar, razão raiz/parte aérea e concentração nutricional foliar. O desenvolvimento das plantas, em geral, foi superior no tratamento convencional com adubos minerais. A razão raiz/parte aérea foi favorecida no tratamento com água residuária. Os resultados indicaram que a água residuária pode ser utilizada na fertirrigação de viveiros para a produção do Eucalyptus grandis, pois todas as plantas cresceram, sem deficiência ou toxidez aparente. Entretanto, constatou-se que essas mudas necessitavam de um maior tempo no viveiro, em comparação com as produzidas com fertilizantes minerais.

The possible use of biochemical markers in the postmortem diagnosis of myocardial ischemia is well known in the forensic setting, though several issues have limited its widespread adoption. The study presented herein focuses of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, troponin T, and troponin I, and the possible influence due to sampling site chosen, postmortem interval elapsed, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts. Comparisons were performed between antemortem serum levels of these markers and postmortem levels measured in pericardial fluid and postmortem serum samples obtained from different sampling sites (n=16). Levels of these markers were also compared in cases characterized by various postmortem intervals (n=48, consisting of 24 ischemic heart disease cases and 24 controls) as well as in cases with and without cardiopulmonary resuscitation (n=22, consisting of 14 cases of hanging and 8 cases of drug intoxication). Our results indicate that N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, troponin T, and troponin I values determined in postmortem serum from femoral blood (collected up to 24h after death) do not differ significantly from those measured in venous blood antemortem serum samples (collected at the upper limbs). In addition, our results reveal that the time elapsed after death should always be taken into consideration when cardiac troponins are measured in postmortem samples. Lastly, our findings reveal the absence of statistically significant differences between levels of the tested biomarkers (in postmortem serum from femoral blood) in cases without cardiopulmonary resuscitation compared to cases with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (at least for postmortem intervals up to 24h).
