This paper describes a variant of the Periodic Capacitated Arc Routing Problem for inspections in a railroad network. Inspections are performed by vehicles over a time horizon on which some stretches need evaluation more frequently than others due to its use. Each car can evaluate one stretch per day without being attached to a depot; at each day, the shift may start and end at different locations. This characterizes the problem as the Periodic Capacitated Arc Routing Problem with Continuous Moves in which firstly the delays on attendances are minimized and, second, the displacement costs. We present a mathematical model and an Ant Colony Optimization algorithm to solve the problem. The use of a local search procedure and some principles of Granular Tabu Search is crucial for the algorithm’s performance. The numerical results are promising, especially for critical situations where the arcs’ needs are close to the total vehicles’ capacity.
This inspection should be performed periodically by vehicle traveling on rails collecting data and identifying gaps that need to be corrected. The aim of this paper is to present a mathematical model based on binary linear programming, capable of solving this problem, which is a real application of Periodic Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (PCARP). In the PCARP each arc of a network has a demand over a well-defined time horizon and routes must be created for each car so that it covers all the requests in the best way possible without exceeding the vehicles capacity at service. The proposed application has different characteristics to those already proposed in the literature because the vehicle does not need to come back to the depot at the end of the day and the service can be delayed if necessary. The result is satisfactory, covering the demands with a synchronized movement of vehicles.
In the case of roads and railways, there is a kind of monitoring and inspection during certain time intervals in order to ensure the flow on roads. The aim of this paper is to present and compare a result of two mathematical models for the Periodic Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (PCARP). This class of problems has gained more attention in the last decade, where it must be determined a route to one or multiple vehicles respecting their capacities, considering a discrete time horizon so that the demands of each arc are attended. The results are satisfactory when applied in this context maintenance.
