La firma del acuerdo comercial MERCOSUR-UE en 2019, en la cumbre del G20, ha expandido el alcance global del bloque comercial sudamericano como un actor multilateral y representa el mayor acuerdo comercial jamás logrado por la Unión Europea y el MERCOSUR. El propósito de este artículo es analizar brevemente los detalles del acuerdo, así como las motivaciones que llevaron a su firma después de un período de 20 años de negociaciones intermitentes. También intentamos contextualizar este acuerdo con otros TLC que la UE ha llevado a cabo en las Américas durante la última década, como el TTIP, el CETA y el Acuerdo Comercial UE-México. Argumentamos que esos nuevos acuerdos mega-regionales, aunque arraigados en escenarios de beneficio mutuo, compiten por establecer nuevas reglas de comercio internacional.

A pesquisa também buscou contextualizaro interesse aumentado pela região com diretrizes oficiais adotadas recentemente por atores relativamente novos, como é o caso da Alemanha.
