Objetivou-se investigar o conhecimento de pais/responsáveis acerca da infecção pelo herpes virus tipos 1 e 2. Um roteiro semiestruturado foi aplicado para a realização do estudo, em uma unidade de saúde de Belford Roxo/RJ, no período entre março e dezembro de 2016. A amostra foi composta por 140 indivíduos (121 mulheres e 19 homens). Desses, 13 (9,3%) declararam ter a infecção, sendo 11 mulheres e 2 homens. Um total de 66 (47,1%) desconhecia a forma de transmissão. Segundo relato dos responsáveis, 6 (4,3%) crianças apresentaram episódios da infecção, dessas, 5 (3,6%) responsáveis não souberam informar como a criança adquiriu o vírus. Três mães apresentaram infecção pelo herpes virus na gestação. Aproximadamente 50% deste grupo desconhecia como ocorre a transmissão destas infecções, além de relatarem uma despreocupação sobre complicações, principalmente relacionadas às crianças. Conclui-se que a fragilidade de conhecimento e/ou práticas inadequadas podem postergar o diagnóstico precoce, podendo dificultar o tratamento e a prevenção de complicações. Há a necessidade de uma ampla divulgação de informações sobre estas infecções para a população.Palavras-chave: herpes simples, herpes labial, pais, cuidado da criança, viroses.
