A infecção do trato urinário (ITU) é na prática clínica ambulatorial a segunda mais comum e no ambiente hospitalar, a primeira. Para o seu correto diagnóstico é imprescindível a correlação com a história clínica, exame físico e exames laboratoriais. O exame padrão ouro no diagnóstico é a urocultura, que é um teste que demanda de 24 a 48 horas para obtenção de resultado, além de ser dispendioso para o laboratório. Com a introdução da automação na urinálise, aumentou-se o interesse em utilizar esse exame para triar casos de ITU e assim reduzir o número de uroculturas necessárias. As amostras deste estudo foram obtidas em parceria com o laboratório de análises clínicas da Unimed São Carlos-SP (UNILAB). As amostras foram processadas pelos aparelhos Urisys 2400 e UF1000i e semeadas em cultura. Foram avaliadas 108 amostras de urina e determinadas relações entre valores de bactérias e urocultura em adultos acima de 40 anos e idosos. Observamos que houve relação entre o número de bactérias e urocultura positiva, com p<0,0001, mantendo significância estatística. Concluímos que a relação entre o número de bactérias e a positividade na urocultura permite definir valores de corte para realização de uroculturas na faixa etária estudada.
