Première question à laquelle il nous faut répondre : pourquoi nous intéresser à Elicia et, peut-être même, qui est Elicia ? Ce n'est certes pas l'un de ces personnages invisibles qui peuplent La Celestina, dont parle Alan Deyermond, ces personnages mentionnés en passant et dont personne ne se souvient, les soeurs de Celestina, l'aubergiste de la place, le jardinier Molléjar ou un certain ambassadeur français 1 . Mais le lecteur occasionnel de l'oeuvre, le lecteur non professionnel, nous serions tentés de dire le vrai lecteur, se rappelle-t-il ce personnage ? Nous avons mené une rapide enquête auprès de quelquesuns de ces lecteurs de notre entourage, et nous nous sommes rendu compte que non. Elicia appartient à ce que Tiphaine Samoyault appelle l'« espace du personnage secondaire, dont toute la géographie, tous les attributs, dessinent le dehors de la fiction » 2 . Elicia est une prostituée qui exerce illicitement chez Celestina, c'est-à-dire hors des murs de la mancebía, la maison de tolérance officielle gérée par la municipalité, seul lieu où la prostitution était tolérée 3 . Mais force est de constater que les contours de cette activité à laquelle les personnages font allusion, mais qui ne se concrétise pas dans la diégèse -entendue comme univers fictionnel -ne sont pas nets. L'évocation est en quelque sorte à l'image de cette occupation même, clandestine. Dans les six actes dans lesquels Elicia intervient, des seize que compte la première version de l'oeuvre de 1499, ce sont cet univers dans lequel elle baigne et le rôle de caractérisation de Celestina en tant qu'entremetteuse et maquerelle qui est le sien, plus que la réalité effective de ses actions, qui font d'elle une prostituée.
