Introduction Nonlinear aeroelasticity is the study of the interactions between inertial, elastic and aerodynamic forces on engineering structures that are exposed to an airflow and feature non-negligible nonlinearity. There exist several good textbooks on linear aeroelasticity for aircraft (Bisplinghoff et al. 1996; Fung 1993; Hodges and Alvin Pierce 2002; Wright and Cooper 2015). Dowell (2004) even includes chapters on nonlinear aeroelasticity and stall flutter, while Paidoussis et al. (2011) discusses a number of nonlinear aeroelastic phenomena occurring in civil engineering structures. However, there is no introductory text that presents the methodologies of nonlinear dynamics and applies them to a wide range of nonlinear aeroelastic systems. The present book aims to fill this gap to a certain degree. The subject area is vast and mutlidisciplinary and it would be impossible to fit every aspect of it in a textbook. The main omission is high fidelity numerical simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics and Computational Structural Dynamics solvers; these methodologies are already the subject of a dedicated text (Bazilevs et al. 2013). The aerodynamic models used in this book are analytical, empirical or based on panel methods while the structural models are either analytical or make use of series solutions. The book is introductory but it assumes knowledge of structural dynamics, aerodynamics and some linear aeroelasticity. The main linear aeroelastic phenomena of flutter and static divergence are discussed in detail because they can affect nonlinear behaviour, but the present work is by no means a complete text on linear aeroelasticity. Unsteady aerodynamic modelling is used throughout the book and discussed in Chapters 8, 10 and in the Appendix. However, again this book is not a complete reference on unsteady aerodynamics, linear or nonlinear. On the other hand, nonlinear dynamics and bifurcation analysis are presented in great detail as they do not normally feature in most undergraduate or even graduate Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering courses. The emphasis of all discussions is on the application rather than the rigorous derivation of the theorems; there already exist several classic textbooks for the latter (Kuznetsov 1998; Guckenheimer and Holmes 1983). More application-based works on nonlinear dynamics also exist (e.g. Strogatz 1994) but they address a wide range of physical, chemical, biological, accounting models, to name a few, whereas the present book concentrates exclusively on aeroelastic phenomena.
This article discusses the application of partial least squares (PLS) for monitoring complex chemical systems. In relation to existing work, this article proposes the integration of the statistical local approach into the PLS framework to monitor changes in the underlying model rather than analyzing the recorded input/output data directly. As discussed in the literature, monitoring changes in model parameters addresses the problems of nonstationary behavior and presents an analogy to model-based approaches. The benefits of the proposed technique are that (i) a detailed mechanistic plant model is not required, (ii) nonstationary process behavior does not produce false alarms, (iii) parameter changes can be non-Gaussian, (iv) Gaussian monitoring statistics can be established to simplify the monitoring task, and (v) fault magnitude and signatures can be estimated. Based on the large body of work in the area of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), the goals of condition monitoring are threefold: (i) to detect anomalous behavior in a process from the measured process variables, (ii) to locate and identify the source of such behavior, and (iii) to identify the magnitude of the fault. An ideal condition monitoring procedure can prevent a major malfunction in processing units by identifying incipient faults before they actually cause significant damage. Abstract:The experimental determination of the vibration characteristics of rotating engine blades is very important for fatigue failure considerations. One of the most promising techniques for measuring the frequency of blade vibrations is blade tip timing. In this paper, three vibration analysis methods were specifically formulated and applied to the tip timing problem for the first time, using data obtained from a simple mathematical blade tip timing simulation. The results from the methods were compared statistically in order to determine which of the techniques is more suitable. One of the methods, the global autoregressive instrumental variables approach, produced satisfactory results at realistic noise levels. However, all of the techniques produced biased results under certain circumstances.
Stall flutter is a nonlinear aeroelastic phenomenon that can affect several types of aeroelastic systems such as helicopter rotor blades, wind turbine blades, and highly flexible wings. Although the related aerodynamic phenomenon of dynamic stall has been the subject of many experimental studies, stall flutter itself has rarely been investigated. This paper presents a set of experiments conducted on a NACA0012 airfoil undergoing stall flutter oscillations in a low-speed wind tunnel. The aeroelastic responses are analyzed with the objective of characterizing the local bifurcation behavior of the system. It is shown that symmetric stall flutter oscillations are encountered as a result of a subcritical Hopf bifurcation, followed by a fold bifurcation. The cause of these bifurcations is the occurrence of dynamic stall, which allows the transfer of energy from the freestream to the wing. A second bifurcation occurs at the system's static divergence airspeed. As a consequence, the wing starts to undergo asymmetric stall flutter bifurcations at only positive (or only negative) pitch angles. The dynamic stall mechanism itself does not change but the flow only separates on one side of the wing.
Multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles make use of multiple propellers, mounted on arms, to produce the required lift. This article investigates the influence on propulsion system efficiency in hover due to the configuration of these propellers. Influence of pusher or puller configuration of the propeller, number of blades, shape and dimensions of the arm, coaxial and overlapping propellers, is presented. A dedicated test bench that allows testing of various experimental setups is designed and built in order to realistically represent multi-rotor arms. Test results show that a two-bladed pusher configuration is most efficient and slenderness of the arm has more influence on efficiency than shape. A coaxial propulsion system approaches the efficiency of a single-prop system at high disk loadings. Finally, interference effects due to overlapping propellers are discussed.
Blade tip timing is a technique for the measurement of vibrations in rotating bladed assemblies. Although the fundamentals of the technique are simple, the analysis of data obtained in the presence of simultaneously occurring synchronous resonances is problematic. A class of autoregressive-based methods for the analysis of blade tip timing data from assemblies undergoing two simultaneous resonances has been developed. It includes approaches that assume both sinusoidal and general blade tip responses. The methods can handle both synchronous and asynchronous resonances. An exhaustive evaluation of the approaches was performed on simulated data in order to determine their accuracy and sensitivity. One of the techniques was found to perform best on asynchronous resonances and one on synchronous resonances. Both methods yielded very accurate vibration frequency estimates under all conditions of interest.
