The number of women participating in softball at the collegiate level continues to rise, yet little is known about collegiate softball players' knowledge about sport nutrition. The purpose of this study was to collect information from Mid-American Conference softball players to determine their current knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to sport nutrition and to identify their preferred sources for obtaining sport nutrition information
The electronic version of Nutrition Support is well researched and provides a wealth of information for any healthcare provider seeking to understand the science behind nutrition needs of the body for both the adult and pediatric population. The book is organized into 16 chapters covering a wide range of topics. A few key topics presented in the book cover energy requirements for specific illnesses, predicting nitrogen requirements during differing metabolic states, detailed descriptions of bioavailability of nutrients, and recommendations for initiating nutrition interventions. Each chapter ends with a highlevel summary of the most significant research findings and provides recommendations for further study for nutrition care professionals. One of the most useful sections of the book for clinicians working with a large patient population receiving enteral feedings discusses the amount, timing, and maintenance of enteral nutrition. It can be difficult to accurately assess a patient's nutrition needs and find the balance for meeting needs without overfeeding or underfeeding. This book provides evidence on timing the start of enteral feeds and how to best calculate calorie needs, which aids clinicians to push for early nutrition interventions. In addition, for clinicians practicing in acute care settings, the book provides a quick reference for validating expenditure equations in distinct patient populations. There are a few drawbacks with the electronic version of the book. The locked PDF format does not allow for bookmarking of pages by the user, which makes it difficult to quickly locate text. Navigating with the hyperlinked text caused some disconnects between the written material and the figures because the figures included many different topic areas. Because the book is so well researched, it tends to read like a dissertation on nutrition support. For clinicians desiring an indepth understanding of nutrition support, this is a great book; however, it is not a quick reference guide.Overall, Nutrition Support provides an in-depth analysis of nutrition support, its use in critically ill patients, and factors to consider prior to and during use of nutrition support. Professionals who desire a broad and well-researched book for nutrition support would find this book meets that need. The electronic version would benefit from an update to a more userfriendly platform, which would allow users to bookmark relevant information and return to the last page read. The content of the book outweighs the miscues of the electronic format and would be an excellent addition to any critical care dietitian's library. The electronic version of the book can be purchased on the author's website: http://www.nutritionsupport.info/node/41.
