La fotografía dental es una parte esencial de la odontología actual, así como un elemento importante para el registro de tratamientos. Para la fotografía dental es necesario una cámara tipo réflex con un lente macro y un flash dedicado. Por las características propias de la cavidad oral será necesario la utilización de retractores, espejos y contrastadores. Con respecto al modo de las funciones de la cámara se requerirá la utilización de modo manual y en el presente artículo se describirán los parámetros necesarios para obtener la mejor calidad de imágenes.
A diferencia de otras especialidades odontológicas, los tratamientos ortodóncicos tienen un tiempo de duración de un año y medio a dos años, las citas se programan por lo regular cada mes, y es importante llevar un control fotográfico del avance del tratamiento. La estandarización es primordial para mantener una fotografía clínica de alta calidad, lo que hace necesario seguir cierta secuencia fotográfica y parámetros para poder estandarizar una serie fotográfica completa. La fotografía clínica en ortodoncia es una herramienta indispensable para el clínico, ya que permite un adecuado diagnóstico, la comunicación con el paciente, el registro del tratamiento y compartir los casos con colegas o, si el caso lo amerita, poder realizar una publicación.
El labio y paladar hendido (LPH) sigue siendo un problema en la actualidad; su tratamiento integral demanda una atención multidisciplinaria, bien determinada y aplicada; sin embargo, por múltiples razones, en nuestro país todavía no ha sido accesible para un gran porcentaje de la población. Los estudios sobre los avances clínicos durante el tratamiento multidisciplinario en los pacientes con labio y paladar hendido son esenciales para investigar los resultados relacionados con el diagnóstico, el tratamiento y la aplicación clínica de la diversa aparatología que existe para el tratamiento de esta alteración. A su vez la demanda de odontología basada en la evidencia resulta en el aumento de los estudios clínicos en los últimos años. La fotografía clínica juega un papel fundamental, ya que permitirá complementar el expediente clínico, tener un registro del avance de los diferentes tratamientos y la facilidad de análisis por parte del equipo multidisciplinario.
La fotografía clínica dentro de la práctica odontológica debe ser reconocida como un valioso registro complementario del expediente clínico, ya que al momento de obtenerla nos proporcionará datos importantes del estado bucal actual del paciente; además, es un método auxiliar al momento de emitir el diagnóstico bucal por su capacidad de permitir analizar minuciosamente lo que observamos clínicamente. A través de la fotografía se puede transmitir información y evidencia dirigida al profesional de la salud, a los pacientes, colegas o para el público en general con la finalidad de dar a conocer nuestros servicios. El uso de la fotografía en la práctica odontológica permite que los pacientes se involucren desde el inicio hasta el final del tratamiento, lo que contribuye en el éxito o fracaso de la comunicación con los pacientes. Aunque el propósito principal de utilizar la fotografía digital en odontología es registrar varios aspectos de la información clínica de la cavidad oral, la fotografía clínica tiene diferentes aplicaciones en odontología. Cada uno de estos usos deberá buscar mejorar la calidad de la práctica dental así como la atención a los pacientes. El objetivo de este texto es dar a conocer las principales aplicaciones que tiene la fotografía clínica en odontología, reconocer las ventajas y los beneficios que brindan al profesional de la salud y recalcar la importancia de tener actualizado y completo el expediente clínico a través de la fotografía.
La fotografía se utiliza como herramienta para expresar y comunicar ideas; en odontología la fotografía clínica tiene como propósito obtener un registro de las manifestaciones clínicas de la cavidad oral (lo cual favorece la documentación médico-legal), el diagnóstico y el plan de tratamiento, la comunicación científica, la práctica docente, la comunicación entre especialistas del ramo y también con el laboratorio dental, la comprensión de los pacientes del estado actual y las opciones de tratamiento, además ayuda al marketing y a la promoción de servicios. Las fotografías se han convertido en un documento esencial en odontología. La falta de conocimiento sobre la técnica, el equipo y los avances han limitado su apropiado uso. Es necesario tener el conocimiento sobre su utilización para obtener las ventajas que la fotografía intraoral y extraoral pueden brindar. El conocimiento es necesario a partir de los principios básicos de fotografía, conocer el equipamiento, accesorios, iluminación, configuraciones, edición, propósito de su uso, impresión, documentación y publicación.
