Seventeen cases of feline cranial cruciate ligament rupture are presented. The cases are divided into two groups: those with traumatic multiligamentous damage, and those with isolated cranial cruciate ligament rupture without a history of trauma. The cats that had suffered cruciate ligament rupture were heavier than the general population of cats and there is evidence reported that this injury parallels the degenerative cranial cruciate ruptures seen in overweight small breed dogs. The limited literature on this subject is reviewed including approaches to treatment.

Treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture almost invariably requires surgery, especially in large‐breed dogs. Treatment of meniscal tears, with partial or complete meniscectomy, seems to be an important component of any surgical plan. Stabilisation of the stifle joint is another goal of most surgical procedures, although the importance of this and the means by which it is accomplished is a topic of much debate. Extracapsular stabilisation techniques and stifle geometry‐modifying osteotomy procedures, of which tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) was the first developed, are currently the most common surgical techniques.
SummaryA 10-year-old spayed female Golden Retriever was admitted with chronic lameness of the right hind limb. A tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) had been performed on this leg approximately three years previously. A progressively growing soft tissue mass, affecting the right stifle, previously treated with TPLO was biopsied and found to be a histiocytic sarcoma. Previously proposed links between the development of neoplasia in the stifle region and the presence of chronic synovitis, osteotomy, orthopaedic implants, and specifically the Slocum TPLO plate, are briefly discussed.
Male crossbred broiler-type chickens were fed graded levels of dietary phosphorus from hatching to 4 weeks of age. Plasma inorganic phosphorus and plasma inorganic calcium were determined on aliquots of blood plasma samples taken when the chickens were 4 weeks of age. The level of plasma inorganic phosphorus decreased when the chickens were fed low levels of dietary phosphorus. The level of plasma inorganic calcium was inversely related to the plasma inorganic phosphorus level. Regression equations were different for each of the four dietary phosphorus levels fed. The sum of plasma inorganic phosphorus and plasma inorganic calcium was very similar for the four treatments.
