This study considers the interaction between duplex stainless steel type 2205 and electrochemically charged hydrogen. Duplex stainless steels combine the mechanical properties of ferrite with the corrosion resistance of austenite and are widely used in many industrial applications. However, they are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. In this work, the steel microstructure is first characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and electron backscatter diffraction. Subsequently, melt extraction is done to determine the amount of hydrogen charged into the material, while in situ hydrogen charged tensile tests are combined with a fractography analysis to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on the mechanical behavior. The material displays a rather significant ductility loss of about 26% as a result of the applied hydrogen charging. Melt extraction identifies the increased hydrogen content in the steel microstructure (up to 50 wppm). Moreover, the hydrogen embrittled regions correspond well to the hydrogen diffusion penetration depth from the edges onwards. These cleavage brittle areas are observed up to the theoretical hydrogen diffusion distance, demonstrating the hydrogen embrittlement effect.
Duplex stainless steels (DSS) combine the mechanical properties of ferrite (α) with the corrosion resistance of austenite (γ), and is widely used in industrial applications. The γ can transform into martensite (SIM) during a deformation. When annealed, these types of steel undergo a reverse transformation, namely, SIM reversed to austenite (SIMRT). The aim of this study is to evaluate SIM and SIMRT in 2304 lean DSS (LDSS) as well as its influence on the mechanical properties after a 60% reduction in thickness. The annealing is conducted within a range of 600–900 °C with a soaking time of 1800s. The samples undergo X‐ray diffraction, EBSD, and a tensile test. The results show that, after cold rolling, the amount of α′‐martensite formed is made up 24%. The α′‐martensite collaborates with the enhanced yield strength and reduces the total elongation. The orientation among γ and α′‐martensite, and (111)γ//(110)α [110]γ//[111] Kurdjumov‐Sachs and (111)γ//(110)α [110]γ//[001]α Nishiyama–Wassermann, is observed after deformation and during the reversion process. The EBSD shows a high misorientation inside the γ after the cold rolling. The SIMRT shows diffusional and shear reversion characteristics, at 900 °C, yield strength is 468 MPa, and the elongation is 32%.
EFFECT OF ANNEALING TEMPERATURE ON THE PRECIPITATION OF SIGMA PHASE IN DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL UNS 31803 AbstractThe duplex stainless steel combines the mechanical properties of ferrite and the corrosion resistance of austenite, widely used in industrial applications that require a good performance in terms of these properties. When this steel is subjected to thermal cycles, secondary phases can precipitate, which causes the deterioration of its properties. The sigma phase is the most relevant between the precipitates which may be formed. The aim of this work is to evaluate and quantify the precipitation of sigma phase when the Duplex UNS 31803 steel is subjected to annealing at different temperatures. For this analysis were used optical and electron microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction, diffraction X -ray spectrometry and X -ray dispersive energy. The sigma phase was observed in three of the four conditions adopted in work. The presence of phase was observed so more pronounced in the condition where the precipitation velocity is maximal.
HOT AND WARM ROLLING EFFECT IN MICROSTRUCTURE, HARDNESS AND TEXTURE OF A MEDIUM MANGANESE STEEL AbstractMedium manganese steels are a grade of the third generation of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) that combine mechanical properties such as ductility and tensile strength, determining characteristics for application in the automotive industry. Conventionally, these steels are subjected to a hot and cold rolling followed by intercritical annealing. However, the warm rolling acquire interest in order to reduce costs and operating time. The aim of this study it is to compare the influence of hot and warm rolling by optical and scanning electron microscopy analysis, X-ray diffraction, Vickers hardness and EBSD in a 8Mn-0,08C steel. A refined and deformed microstructure in warm-rolled sample was observed, with a higher volume fraction of retained austenite, which derived a lower hardness. In the hot-rolled sample, the average hardness value revealed a martensite with a low carbon content microstructure. The texture shows a greater intensity of the α fiber components in warm rolled to warm due to higher strain in this thermomechanical processing.
