Although single workers comprise over one third of the North American workforce, this significant segment of workers has been neglected as a subject of rigorous research. This study empirically explored three issues: (I) Are contemporary single adults still significantly different from their married counterparts on measures of physical and psychological well‐being? (2) Are contemporary single adults significantly different from their married counterparts on work‐related attitudes such as job satisfaction and behaviors such as absenteeism? and, (3) Are there significant differences in well‐being and workplace variables between more precise single status types (e.g., separated, divorced) traditionally grouped together under the omnibus “single” category? 1022 adults were sampled and results indicated that contemporary singles were less satisfied with their lives, less satisfied with their jobs, and more prone to absenteeism than were their married counterparts. In addition, some significant differences were found between categories of singles formerly grouped together suggesting that the single worker population is more hetereogenous than traditionally believed. Implications of these findings for both research and practice are discussed and future research directions are proposed.
A model is developed which allows an organization to assess its environmental perception and how that perception may impact its response to stakeholders. The model differentiates an organization’s socioecological responsibility across four dimensions for placement on Colby’s five‐paradigm continuum, which ranges between the frontier economic paradigm and new ecological paradigm. This article provides a useful means of assessing the ecological paradigm utilized by firms and offers criteria that may assist the organization in developing a competitively valuable environmental stance.
