A concepção nietzscheana sobre a arte tem suas raízes na tragédia grega. O grego arcaico foi quem mais teve sensibilidade para o sofrimento e intuição da tragédia da existência. No Nascimento da Tragédia (1871), Nietzsche conta a antiga lenda do sábio Sileno, companheiro de Dionísio, quando este, prisioneiro e interpelado pelo rei Midas, revela com desprezo aquilo que convinha à espécie humana: "O melhor de tudo é para ti inteiramente inatingível: não ter nascido, não ser, nada ser. Depois disso, porém, o melhor para ti é logo morrer". 1 Esta problemática existencial é que dá origem à arte e à tragédia grega. A tragédia significa o conflito entre as pulsões artísticas da natureza; a arte trágica é que possibilita a união e o equilíbrio entre os instintos pulsionais apolíneo e dionisíaco da natureza.Isto significa dizer que a tragédia grega tem como heróis primordiais Apolo e Dionísio; Dionísio, o deus da desmesura, do caos, da fúria sexual, da volúpia da dor, representa o elemento extático do palco grego, enquanto que o deus Apolo é a expressão da luz, da beleza, da harmonia, da ordem, da liberdade dos sonhos que possibilita tornar a vida possível e desejável. A união de Apolo e Dionísio enquanto forças simbólicas expressam a essên-cia da natureza. Daí resulta que Dionísio não possa viver sem os limites que Apolo lhes oferece ao transformar o mundo em arte.Na exaltação da cultura trágica grega, Nietzsche revela a existência do duplo princípio gerador das artes como expressão essencial do mundo: as pulsões naturais artísti-cas apolíneo e dionisíaco, as quais manifestam-se na vida humana através dos estados estéticos, respectivamente, do sonho e da embriguez. Esses estados fisiológicos opõem-se como condições necessárias para a arte produzir-se. O sonho caracteriza o mundo estético originário do princípio apolíneo como símbolo da bela aparência face ao mundo estético da embriaguez originário do princípio dionisíaco. A embriaguez é o estado que despedaça e elimina o individual. Em outras palavras, na embriaguez desfaz-se os laços do principium individuationis como se o véu de maia rasgasse para aparecer a realidade mais fundamental: a união do homem com a natureza.
