SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
We described a sibship suffering from tuberous sclerosis, in which 4 children showed West's syndrome. The importance of our observations lies in the following facts:
They corroborated the opinion of Gastaut et al. that tuberous sclerosis is a factor of great importance in the aetiology of infantile myoclonic epilepsy with hypsarrhythmia (IMEH).
They revealed a familial form of IMEH which heralded tuberous sclerosis; familial observations on West's syndrome are still rare and in terms of tuberous sclerosis our family represents the second published study of the literature.
It is rather difficult to determine the relations between West's syndrome and mental retardation; our findings warrant the conclusion that there is no strict parallelism between IMEH and mental defectiveness.
