Alle unsere Vorstellungen über die Verbreitung des Diabetes in der Bevölkerung kranken daran, daß wir bisher zuverlässige Grundlagen für eine derartige statistische Erhebung überhaupt. nicht besitzen. Aus begreiflichen Gründen. Der lebende Diabetiker konnte bisher von keiner Statistik erfaßt werden, die Sterblichkeitsziffern geben aber siçherlich nicht das richtige Verhältnis von Diabetesfällen zur Bevölkerungszahl. Nur ein Teil der Diabetiker stirbt ja an der diabetischen Stoffwechselstörung. Die numerisch weit überwiegenden leichten Diabetiker sterben meist an interkurrenten Erkrankungen, und oft genug wird dabei . der Diabetes selbst statistisch garnicht registriert. Das Fehlen brauchbarer Zahlen über die Häufigkeit des Diabetes hat wohl. jeder Diabetesautor schmerzlich empfunden.,,Die statistischen Erhebungen, welche hierüber mitgeteilt werden, muß man aus schuldiger Artigkeit gegen die Autoren übergehen", sagt N au n y n.
