Aggregation of the silicate ion has been studied by accurate pH titrations of sodium silicate-sodium perchlorate solutions ( "a+] being kept constant) at constant [Sil-concentration. z v. pH-curves (z = average charge per silica unit) were calculated from the experimental data. These curves could be explained by assuming the formation o f "core + links" complexes of the general composition HSSiO,-(H,SiO,)..The data which cover a limited range are compatible both with the formation of a single complex (n = 2, probably a ring) and with an unlimited mechanism (n = 1. 2, 3 . . . .).Equilibrium constants fur both mechanisms are given. --*) Cf. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
