Travel for religious-related purposes – faith-based tourism is gradually becoming a renowned form of tourism globally. Experiencing this type of tourism has turned sacred spaces into tourist destination where visitors participate in different faith-based tourism products or activities. These are pilgrimages and dynamic ritual performances wherein the powers of spiritual entities are invoked and utilized by man. The efficacy of such activities in attracting huge tourist traffic is highly beneficial to sacred spaces economy. Despite, this positive impact, the consumption of faith-based tourism products are beset with challenges which militates its growth. To address the issue, this paper employed ethnographic research to investigate the challenging factors of faith-based tourism products of three sacred spaces (Redemption Camp, Osun Osogbo Sacred grove and NASFAT camp) in southwestern Nigeria. There are numerous sacred spaces in the region of study, however; the selected spaces represent the three major religions (Christianity, Islam and African traditional religion) of the country. The study aims to address the challenges militating against the utilization of the uniqueness of faith-based tourism products in promoting sacred spaces as tourism destinations. The findings revealed that the major challenge that is posed is overcrowding but with improved infrastructure and sound instructions this can be adequately managed.
The extended family is a system that promotes cohesion, togetherness, cooperation and support amongst its members. It has been a cherished tradition in most African societies from pre-colonial era to present period. The existence of this family system accounts for the longevity of ancestral traditions and heritage which is the bedrock and sustenance of most African societies. However, with the adoption of western culture, the effects of global economic meltdown and impacts of inter and intra ethnic conflicts threatens this cherished extended family tradition.. This paper explores the role relationship in kinship in selected West African societies. It adopts an exploratory approach; drawing largely from secondary data. This study posits that role relationship in kinship is an indispensable tie among Africans especially in the western region. Also most of its tenets have become resilient in solidifying the nationhood of most African societies despite acculturation. The paper concludes that notwithstanding the relative influence of modernity and urbanisation, African societies can, through embracing modern technology maintain its extended family ties even if spread over a wide geographical area.
Substance abuse among youths and young adults in Nigeria has been a significant health problem that threatens sustainable human development. There are a number of studies that have looked into drug abuse among adolescents. Some of the studies reported that youths experiment with substance abuse at some point in their lifetime. However, not so many of such researchers examined the implications of drug abuse on sustainable human development. This gap was the motivation for this study. The study explored substance abuse and addiction among undergraduates in Nigerian private universities; communicating behavioural change for sustainable human development. The study was premised on the self esteem, family, availability and proneness and developmental stages theories of drug abuse. Using the purposive sampling technique, the key informant interview was used to elicit information from 140 youths who are substance abusers in a private university in south west, Nigeria. Structured interview was also conducted to elicit additional information from the Student affairs officer of the said university. Findings reveal that substance abuse among youths has multi-causal elements. Besides, it was gathered that a lot of communication measures have been directed towards changing substance abusers’ behaviour. It was recommended that wholesome concerted efforts must be made to eradicate the menace for sustainable human development.
Inter-faith marriage, as a challenge to religious identity is commonplace in many religious societies. In pre-colonial Nigerian society the institution of marriage was hedged with strict ethnic modalities which became weakened by western influences through colonisation. Thus, inter-faith marriage, one of the features of modern Nigeria is beset with challenges deeply reflected in the differences in religious beliefs. The prevalence of this challenge made it open to redress from different social instruments, and specifically film. In the narrative of the film North East, there appears to be a negotiation of religious identity instead of the promotion and preservation of it as a sub-set of culture. This study examined this negotiation of religious identity in relation to marriage with the aim of ascertaining the acceptability in the modern African society, and in particular, Nigeria. It employed a qualitative survey as research design, and the data collection instrument was focus group discussion (FGD). The study found that love rather than religious identity should be the foundation of marriage. In addition, the study revealed that the film industry can encourage inter-faith marriages in multi-religious societies despite the challenges as presented in the North East. Therefore, the study concluded that since inter-faith marriage is fraught with challenges, film producers, should endeavour to run a follow-up story line that may present a clear picture of aftermath challenges of inter-faith marriage and its management.
