Este trabajo analiza los pulsos y tensiones causados por la política de moderación inspirada por Francia en 1823 como alternativa al régimen constitucional español. La propuesta francesa apenas convenció a una minoría moderada, mientras que sus aliados realistas se aferraron al absolutismo y se resistieron con fuerza a las concesiones políticas, haciendo inútil en este sentido el enorme esfuerzo militar y económico realizado por Francia durante la campaña militar. A partir de octubre, una vez liberado del control constitucional, Fernando VII confirmó esa misma línea intransigente y evitó dar su visto bueno a cualquier cesión, por moderada que fuera. Promovió además una política de castigo al vencido, que trató de imponer a pesar de la presión ejercida por sus aliados para que concediera una amnistía amplia.
Las causas del colapso del Trienio Liberal están claramente vinculadas con la intervención militar francesa de 1823, que contó con el respaldo de las potencias absolutistas. Sin embargo, otros factores influyeron en el fracaso del proyecto iniciado en 1820, tanto de carácter externo, como interno. Este trabajo analiza cómo los derrotados, de la mano de Ocios de Emigrados Españoles (Londres, 1824-27), volvieron la mirada al problema y, con un componente claro de nostalgia de lo que pudo haber sido y no fue, construyeron una memoria del pasado reciente capaz de identificar las claves principales del proceso de caída del régimen liberal, entre las que apenas hubo lugar para la autocrítica.
