In the face of the confusion and uncertainty that COVID-19 has caused over the last year, Geography has proven to be a useful aid in the interpretation of the spatial dynamics that explain the transmission of the virus. Applied cartography and GIS analysis of epidemiological data have been consolidated as essential tools for interpreting the health crisis. This paper explores the usefulness of maps for the study of the evolution of the pandemic in Castile and Leon, one of the Spanish regions with the highest levels of infection and mortality. Based on the statistical variables of sick and dead people at the scale of the Basic Health Area (BHA), a first analytical approach is carried out by means of a sequence of dynamic maps during the first wave. Afterwards, a systematic study is carried out using thematic mapping for the period of the three waves, a period between March 2020 and March 2021. The analysis unravels the differential impact of the disease between rural and urban areas and reveals the problems of the mismatch between the functional divisions of the territory (BHA, as units of health analysis) and the scale of administrative management (municipalities, as the effective scale of action).
The industry has a relevant spatial and socioeconomic importance in most of the Spanish cities and nowadays is one of the main urban economic activities. However, in many situations, and despite recent advances in the past two decades, industrial heritage is a value that is still not sufficiently widespread in society. The factories, their activity, and their historical evolution are often disconnected and isolated from the daily life of the cities, being quite an unknown aspect for most of the citizens. This contribution presents the result of various experiences of knowledge transmission on the heritage value of industry, through the use of games and storytelling technique as an educational tool and the combination of different technologies (3D modelling, videomapping, virtual reality) as useful tools to spread the explanation of this phenomenon.
ABSTRACTThe spread of the Garden-City in Spain melted, in the case of Castile and León, with the regionalist movement in Castile in the second decade of the twentieth century and the efforts of the Castilian bourgeoisie for stimulating the economy of the area, at the same time that they try to solve, at least partially, the problem of housing in Castile. They got few material results from this conjunction and in all the cases, much closer to the development of the Garden-Suburbs than to the ideas of Howard. That happens with the Garden-City of La Castellana in Burgos (Spain), whose origins and evolution updated, are studied and analysed in this article.
In recent decades, particularly intense changes have occurred in Spanish urban areas. This is the result of demographic and urbanizing transformations that have led to a change in the city model. The predominance of compact forms has been replaced by the growing prominence of urban sprawl. Structures are now more extensive, characterized, in turn, by fragmentation and the notable consumption of land in the peripheries. In medium-sized cities, the municipalities bordering the central cities have concentrated the processes of suburbanization and periurbanization. This paper addresses the processes of change for 34 cities and their urban areas located in inland Spain. A proposal is made for the delimitation and characterization of urban areas, taking the municipality as the unit of analysis. At the methodological level, six variables are used, analyzed by means of multicriteria statistical techniques combined with the use of GIS tools. An Urban Transformation Index (ITU) has been developed that synthesizes urbanizing, demographic and socioeconomic dynamics (six variables related to population, housing and socio-productive structure are used). In the territorial area, the 20-min isochrone is used as a reference. In the temporal domain, the period of analysis addresses the events of the first two decades of the twenty-first century.
The role of the industry has largely explained the contemporary development of cities as an economic agent for employment and being responsible for the great social changes in urban history. According to this function, companies and factories have developed a decisive influence on the configuration of most urban spaces. This activity has also been essential in the evolution of medium-sized cities, with a later industrialization process. The evolution of the industry in the city has largely defined the urban form of the current structures or, in other words, the urban plan of the Spanish medium cities has an intense relationship with the contemporary industrial process. This contribution raises a reflection about how this process has taken place in the Spanish middle cities, reflecting on the presence of industry in each of the stages of the contemporary urbanization process.
