24By electron cryo-tomography and subtomogram averaging, translation-arrested 25 ribosomes were used to depict the clustered organisation of the TOM complex on the 26 surface of mitochondria, corroborating earlier reports of localized translation. 27Ribosomes were shown to interact specifically with the TOM complex and nascent 28 chain binding was crucial for ribosome recruitment and stabilization. Ribosomes were 29 bound to the membrane in discrete clusters, often in the vicinity of the crista junctions. 30This interaction highlights how protein synthesis may be coupled with transport, and 31 the importance of spatial organization for efficient mitochondrial protein import.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
