El propósito de esta investigación es hacer una aproximación a unos determinados modos de leer y escribir presentes en la formación que se imparte en la Universidad del Valle. Esta investigación constituye las dos primeras fases de un proyecto más amplio cuyo objetivo general es describir, caracterizar, analizar e interpretar las prácticas de lectura y escritura dominantes en la universidad colombiana. El análisis de los datos, de naturaleza cuantitativa, permitió la identificación de una tendencia dominante según la cual a los estudiantes se les solicita leer y escribir para responder sobre todo a las exigencias académicas de los planes de estudio y menos a otras prácticas de corte más investigativo, de divulgación y proyección de la formación universitaria y ciudadana en general. Se constata, además, una orientación didáctica anclada en la tradición pedagógica heteroestructurante.
¿A qué se deben las dificultades que los estudiantes están enfrentando en la apropiación del conocimiento de campos de saber específico? ¿Tienen estas dificultades que ver con sus modos de leer y escribir? ¿Qué hace la Universidad al respecto? Preguntas como estas hacen parte de las agendas de los investigadores interesados en responder a la hipótesis según la cual los problemas de lectura y escritura académica que enfrentan los jóvenes que ingresan a la Universidad son externos al espacio formativo universitario y se deben haber resuelto previamente. Frente a esta consideración, en este trabajo se plantea que la alfabetización académica, más que un estado se concibe como un proceso continuo y dinámico que se debe entender en su especificidad. En este sentido, precisan que las prácticas de lectura y escritura que se exigen en la educación superior son también específicas, por lo cual es necesario trabajar con quienes ingresan en este nivel formativo en la perspectiva de resolver su relación con las nuevas lógicas de comprensión y producción del conocimiento. Los autores hacen un llamado para que los aportes de este tipo de investigaciones se articulen a las directrices curriculares sobre lectura y escritura en la Universidad, de manera que se propicien nuevas orientaciones didácticas y pedagógicas que contribuyan a la formación integral.
