A nivel mundial, una de las zonas geográficas con mayor diversidad biocultural es América Latina, en cuyo territorio habitan 522 pueblos indígenas hablantes de 420 idiomas (Maffi, 2007; Unicef, 2009), además de un importante número —aún no determinado— de pueblos tradicionales, campesinos y afrodescendientes. Su patrón de asentamiento se presenta en territorios de alta diversidad biológica (Boege, 2008), lo que demuestra empíricamente el rol de custodios y constructores pragmáticos (más que destructores, como se afirma desde algunas posturas preservacionistas) de la diversidad biológica de sus entornos.
