A escassez de recursos naturais tem gerado uma busca por alternativas que permitam conciliar crescimento econômico e sustentabilidade. Os problemas gerados pelo acúmulo de resíduos em locais inapropriados devem ser solucionados com a finalidade de evitar a degradação ambiental. Neste sentido, a implantação do Projeto de Gerenciamento dos Resíduos Sólidos consiste numa ferramenta útil, tanto para a minimização dos impactos gerados, quanto para a melhoria na saúde e qualidade de vida da população. Dessa forma, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi implantar o Projeto de Gerenciamento dos Resíduos Sólidos, na esfera de uma instituição de assistência continuada, visando à minimização do volume de resíduos gerados, partindo da conscientização e sensibilização dos agentes envolvidos quanto à coleta seletiva. Para tanto, foi realizado o diagnóstico na Associação dos Pais e Amigos dos Leucêmicos de Alagoas (APALA), no período de Dezembro de 2012 a Março de 2013. O estudo foi estruturado nas fases de caracterização física dos resíduos gerados, quantificação da geração dos resíduos, capacitações, adequações dos ambientes, implantação da política de adoção de um copo, vistorias e acompanhamentos, instauração de uma comissão interna de acompanhamento e destinação final dos resíduos sólidos. Tais ações resultaram na redução de custos, volume de resíduo enviado para a coleta pública. O trabalho comprovou a viabilidade da implantação de projetos de gerenciamento de resíduos, considerando que todos os objetivos foram atendidos, e que houve mudanças de atitude em relação às questões referente à sustentabilidade.
