Measurements of the linear birefringence in the distorted phase of (Tb, Tm)VO, and (Tb, Yb)VO, crystals allow to separately establish the contributions of the individual rare-earth ions and the anion complex for the first time. By this, the dissimilar wavelength dependence of the birefringence in pure Tb and Tm vanadate can be understood. A mean field theory including random-strain effects is used to treat the distorted phase and to elucidate the absence of the Jahn-Teller phase transition a t low Tb concentrations.Nessungen der linearen Doppelbrechung in der verzerrten Phase von (Tb, Tm)VO, und (Tb, Yb)VO, machen es moglich, die Beitrage der einzelnen Seltenen-Erd-Ionen und des Anionen-Komplexes zum erstenmal getrennt zu bestimmen. Below T N = 3.9 K Tb,O,SO, is antiferromagnetic with canted moments. I n the ordered phase, two of the four neighbouring moments are antiparallel and two nearly perpendicular to that of a central ion. The angular dependence of magnetisation, magnetic susceptibility, and spectroscopic Zeeman effect is analysed and the interaction constants (dipole and superexchange) are derived. The crystal field splitting of the two lowest Tb3+ states seems to be vanishingly small. Mean field calculations for applied external fields yield a variety of ferrimagnetic phases with various fractions of the saturation magnetisation, depending on temperature and field direction.Unterhalb von TN = 3,9 K ist Tb,0,S04 antiferromagnetisch mit verkanteten Momenten. In der geordneten Phase sind zwei der vier Nachbarmomente parallel und zwei fast senkrecht zu dem eines Aufions. Es wird die Winkelabhkngigkeit der Magnetisierung, der magnetischen Wechselsuszeptibilitat und des spektroskopischen Zeemaneffekts gemessen und die Wechselwirkungskonstanten (Dipol-und Superaustausch-) bestimmt. Die Kristallfeldaufspaltung der beiden tiefsten Tb3+-Zust5nde scheint vernachlassigbar klein zu sein. Molekularfeldrechnungen fur %&ere Felder liefern eine Vielzahl von ferrimagnetischen Phasen mit verschiedenen Bruchteilen der Sattigungsmagnetisierung, die von Temperatur und Feldriehtung abh&ngen.
