Resumo O estudo da evolução temporal do uso e ocupação do solo em unidades políticas administrativas auxilia o processo de caracterização do espaço geográfico ao longo do tempo e aprimora a compreensão e o planejamento territorial. Este trabalho teve como objetivo a análise espaçotemporal das mudanças do uso do solo entre os anos 2000 a 2016 no Estado do Maranhão. O estado em estudo possui aproximadamente sete milhões de habitantes, sendo o quarto estado mais populoso do nordeste brasileiro. Localiza-se em uma área de transição entre as regiões Amazônica (úmida) e Nordeste (semiárida), favorecendo grandes contrastes anuais de precipitação e temperatura. A porção do estado que contígua o bioma amazônico-Amazônia legal, abrange uma área equivalente a 80% da área territorial do Estado, cerca de 264.000 km² que representa a região de transição entre a Amazônia e o Cerrado, fundamental para a conservação dos serviços ecossistêmicos e da biodiversidade. Para análise temporal da paisagem foram obtidos os dados de uso e ocupação do solo disponibilizados pelo IBGE, a base de dados e imagens foram geoprocessadas e georreferenciados no sistema de informações geográficas (SIG)-ArcGIS versão 10.3., na projeção geográfica de Universal Transversa de Mercator, Fuso 23 Sul, Datum SIRGAS 2000 e resolução de pixel de 30 m. Os resultados evidenciam a intensificação e expansão das atividades antrópicas no estado, com grande conversão das áreas de vegetação nativa por áreas agropecuária.
