RESUMO Com o objetivo de estudar a constituição da assistência pública à infância e do ensino da pediatria no Rio de Janeiro, partimos da hipótese de que o ensino da pediatria ocorreu ao largo da Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro. Os médicos envolvidos nesse processo criaram espaços independentes, tanto para a clínica quanto para o ensino das chamadas moléstias de crianças. Acompanhamos a trajetória de dois desses médicos,
Dilene Raimundo Nascimento Fundação Ataulpho de Paiva Liga Brasileira contra a Tuberculose: um século de luta Rio de Janeiro, Quadratim/FAPERJ, 2001, 156p. O livro de Dilene Nascimento acompanha a trajetória da Fundação Ataulpho de Paiva ao longo de um século de existência, desde o surgimento da Liga Brasileira contra a Tuberculose, em 4 de agosto de 1900, até o tempo presente, apontando suas perspectivas. Contudo, muito mais que conhecer a história da luta contra a tuberculose no início do século XX, seu trabalho nos permite refletir sobre a relação entre a filantropia, a assistência médica e o Estado ao longo deste período.A Liga Brasileira contra a Tuberculose, criada no Rio de Janeiro, reunia médicos, higienistas, intelectuais, membros da alta sociedade carioca que buscavam a cura desta doença, bem como sua profilaxia. O debate em torno desta doença era grande desde o final do século XIX, tanto na Academia de Medicina quanto na imprensa quotidiana. Nesta época, foi criada uma comissão chefiada por Domingos Freire para ir à Alemanha estudar a eficácia terapêutica da tuberculina de Koch, recém-descoberta (1890) e, logo depois, o Jornal do Commercio patrocinou experiências com a tuberculina de Koch nas enfermarias da Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Rio de Janeiro. Toda esta ambiência criou um espaço propício para a reunião de um grupo de médicos e intelectuais em torno da idéia, lançada em 1899 por Cypriano de Freitas na Academia de Medicina, de se fundar um órgão específico para o combate da tuberculose. Deste marco zero à atuação contemporânea da Fundação Ataulpho de Paiva, é uma longa jornada.Desde seu início, a Liga Brasileira contra a Tuberculose, segundo a autora, se apresentou como instituição de caráter filantrópico, colocou a serviço da ciência e da sociedade todo um instrumental de combate à tuberculose em nossa cidade (p. 11), reforçando que sua atuação estava localizada em uma área que não era prioritária para o governo federal.A partir deste ponto, podemos discutir o papel da filantropia na sociedade e, notadamente, na primeira metade do século XX.A filantropia pode ser entendida, grosso modo, como a laicização da caridade cristã, ocorrida a partir do século XVIII, e que teve nos filósofos das luzes seus maiores propagandistas. O fazer o bem, o socorro aos necessitados, deixa de ser uma virtude cristã para ser uma virtude social; e a generosidade é entendida pelos filósofos ilustrados como a virtude do homem bem-nascido, que tem inclinação para doar, doar largamente, daí a forte presença das grandes fortunas entre os principais filantropos. O presente artigo pretende analisar o Hospital Gaffrée e Guinle, construído na década de 1920, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, em um processo de tomada de controle, pela administração pública, da gestão da assistência hospitalar na capital federal. Esse hospital representa o encontro da filantropia com um projeto de saúde pública posto em prática no Distrito Federal à mesma época. A instituição sintetiza também o desenvolvimento da medicina e sua tradução na arquitetura hospitalar, bem como a efervescência intelectual do período, mais especificamente das idéias nacionalistas, interpretadas tanto na escolha do estilo arquitetônico - o neocolonial - quanto na questão da salvação da raça através do combate e controle da sífilis.

Este artigo tem por objetivo estudar a construção do Hospital do Câncer na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, a partir de uma análise das ações e dos grupos sociais envolvidos com a filantropia na cidade, durante a Primeira República. Para tal, apresenta-se um estudo prosopográfico inicial dessa elite, apontando para sua configuração na criação da instituição. Um segundo recorte refere-se às ações filantrópicas de Guilherme Guinle nesse período.
