The ageing in place agenda emphasises the importance of supporting older adults to age in their communities surrounded by the personal resources to age well. In exploring the relationship between older people and their environment, the concept of place insideness is seen as central to constructing feelings of identity, belonging and attachment in old age. Yet there has been little research exploring how older adults experience place insideness across different urban, social and cultural contexts which is an impediment to identifying effective interventions for age-friendly cities and communities. This article explores how place insideness is experienced amongst older adults across India, Brazil and the United Kingdom. The article presents qualitative findings from 294 semi-structured interviews collected across 9 cities and 27 neighbourhoods. The findings reveal that older adults cultivate their sense of place insideness in old age through dimensions of physical insideness (i.e., environmental competence in navigating and engaging in the community), social insideness (i.e., knowing others) and autobiographical insideness (i.e., shared place histories). In drawing on older people’s understanding of their communities, this article explores the opportunities and challenges in developing a sense of place insideness to support ageing well. We identify implications for policy and practice in terms of how we can better design urban environments as age-friendly communities which support a greater sense of place for older people.
The research addresses issues related to forced evictions of families in work function aimed at preparation of the host cities in Brazil to the 2014 World Cup The main objective is to investigate the perception of different user groups as the mega event, analyzing different looks about thereof. For that, we had the case study the city of Porto Alegre / RS, as this, as well as other host cities presented investments to meet the mega event triggering removals at different points of the capital. Moreover, Porto Alegre is the third city with the highest number of the country removals, as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which occupy the top positions, have higher expropriations as a result of more people. Still, compared to Curitiba / PR, which was also the host city representing the south, the state capital scored five times as many people removed because of the mega event. So we had to doubling Trunk Avenue as an object of study, since the work, according to the city of Porto Alegre, was the highlight because there is a social project. Data collection consisted of two phases: (i) file survey and (ii) field survey. The first provided the information about the road project, obtaining grants for starting the field survey. The second, divided into field observations, questionnaires, interviews, focus group and drawings. It is noteworthy that the methods were applied to different user groups: people who have suffered with the removal process and those that have not gone through such a process. Soon, it is expected that the survey results serve as a theoretical benefit to nearby mega-events, so that there is greater attention to removals, as these must be carried out without the violation of human rights.
