FLORISTIC AND STRUCTURE OF SEASONALLY DRY TROPICAL FORESTSABSTRACT: A floristic and structural survey of the tree community in different environments (slope, Arboreal Caatinga and ecotone to savannah) were carried out in Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park, North of Minas Gerais. We aimed to test the following hypotheses: 1 -There is floristic differentiation among the environments; 2 -All environments have the same structural characteristics. Venn Diagrams were used to compare both the shared and unshared species among the environments. Tree distribution by diameter classes for each environment was made by means of frequency histograms. An Indicator Species Analysis and usual phytossociological parameters were used. A total of 305 species were found, distributed in 173 genera and 48 families, of which 166 were found in the slope, 204 in the Arboreal Caatinga and 155 in the ecotone. 54 species were exclusive to the slope, 65 to the Arboreal Caatinga and 35 to the ecotone and only 69 species were common to all three environments. 1391 individuals were sampled, yielding an estimated density of 1340.62, 1765 and 1280 individuals . , respectively for the slope, Arboreal Caatinga and ecotone. The Shannon diversity index and Pielou's evenness were, respectively, 3.49 and 0.80 for the slope, 3.74 and 0.84 for the Arboreal Caatinga and 3.61 and 0.85 for the ecotone. The Arboreal Caatinga and the slope presented a gradual decrease in frequency towards the higher diameter classes whereas the ecotone tended to follow a normal distribution.
Tropical forests have played an important role as a carbon sink over time. However, the carbon dynamics of Brazilian non-Amazon tropical forests are still not well understood. Here, we used data from 32 tropical seasonal forest sites, monitored from 1987 to 2020 (mean site monitoring length, ~15 years) to investigate their long-term trends in carbon stocks and sinks. Our results highlight a long-term decline in the net carbon sink (0.13 Mg C ha−1 year−1) caused by decreasing carbon gains (2.6% by year) and increasing carbon losses (3.4% by year). The driest and warmest sites are experiencing the most severe carbon sink decline and have already moved from carbon sinks to carbon sources. Because of the importance of the terrestrial carbon sink for the global climate, policies are needed to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases and to restore and protect tropical seasonal forests.
FLORISTIC COMPOSITION AND WOOD COMMUNITY STRUCTURE OF TWO CERRADO STRICTO SENSU AREAS ON NORTH OF MINAS GERAIS
Caatinga represents one of the two major centers of Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (SDTF) and is completely inserted in the Brazilian territory. The present work aimed to evaluate the structure of two micro-environments and relate them to environmental variables. Twenty 20 × 20 m plots were placed in which we measured the height and CBH and made the botanical identification of all trees with CBH ≥10 cm. The CCA and indicator species analysis presented a clear distribution of species according to the micro-environments. We concluded that the presence of limestone slabs provided the formation of microhabitats, thus influencing the distribution and composition of tree species, what characterized the phytoecological unit here referred as “furados”.
In view of the above, this study sought to evaluate if there are floristic and structural changes in "Cerradão" fragment, Rio Verde city, Goiás state, Brazil, in a time span of three years. Two inventories were carried out: the first one was carried out in 2011, where 20 plots of 100 m² each were established; the second inventory was performed in 2014, where all individuals from the first inventory were remediated and those who met the minimum inclusion criteria were recorded. The changes were evaluated by comparisons between: basal area, families, genera and species, number of individuals, density, dominance, frequency, importance value, Pielou equability and Shannon diversity. There were few changes, and statistically, there was no difference between inventories. The family Calophyllaceae and included Burseraceae were excluded. Six genera were excluded and three were excluded. In 2011, 64 were inventoried, while in 2014 there were 61 species. The recruits numbered 43, while the number of individuals mortality was 81. Thus, the total number of individuals sampled in the first inventory (n = 394) was higher than the second (n = 356). To detect changes in the species recruitment and mortality in this ecosystem, it is recommended that the monitoring period be extended, with a...
