Raman spectra of seven commercial poly(methy1 methacrylate) intraocular lenses (IOLs) before and after implantation in the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes are reported and discussed in order to assess their biocompatibility. The material does not seem to change its structure on implantation; in particular the level of residual monomer, which is the main factor responsible for the biological intolerance of the lenses, remains constant.Providing a non-destructive structural probe, Raman spectroscopy is a suitable method for monitoring the biocompatibility of ophthalmological materials.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
