A retinal vessel segmentation method based on cellular neural networks (CNNs) is proposed. The CNN design is characterized by a virtual template expansion obtained through a multistep operation. It is based on linear space-invariant 3 3 templates and can be realized using existing chip prototypes like the ACE16K. The proposed design is capable of performing vessel segmentation within a short computation time. It was tested on a publicly available database of color images of the retina, using receiver operating characteristic curves. The simulation results show good performance comparable with that of the best existing methods.

Background: Experimental studies using qualitative or quantitative analysis have demonstrated that the human voice progressively worsens with ageing. These studies, however, have mostly focused on specific voice features without examining their dynamic interaction. To examine the complexity of age-related changes in voice, more advanced techniques based on machine learning have been recently applied to voice recordings but only in a laboratory setting. We here recorded voice samples in a large sample of healthy subjects. To improve the ecological value of our analysis, we collected voice samples directly at home using smartphones. Methods: 138 younger adults (65 males and 73 females, age range: 15–30) and 123 older adults (47 males and 76 females, age range: 40–85) produced a sustained emission of a vowel and a sentence. The recorded voice samples underwent a machine learning analysis through a support vector machine algorithm. Results: The machine learning analysis of voice samples from both speech tasks discriminated between younger and older adults, and between males and females, with high statistical accuracy. Conclusions: By recording voice samples through smartphones in an ecological setting, we demonstrated the combined effect of age and gender on voice. Our machine learning analysis demonstrates the effect of ageing on voice.

A BS TRACT: Background: Patients with essential tremor have upper limb postural and action tremor often associated with voice tremor. The objective of this study was to objectively examine voice tremor and its response to symptomatic pharmacological treatment in patients with essential tremor using voice analysis consisting of power spectral analysis and machine learning. Methods: We investigated 58 patients (24 men; mean age ± SD, 71.7 ± 9.2 years; range, 38-85 years) and 74 age-and sex-matched healthy subjects (20 men; mean age ± SD, 71.0 ± 12.4 years; range, 43-95 years). We recorded voice samples during sustained vowel emission using a high-definition audio recorder. Voice samples underwent sound signal analysis, including power spectral analysis and support vector machine classification. We compared voice recordings in patients with essential tremor who did and did not manifest clinically overt voice tremor and in patients who were and were not under the symptomatic effect of the best medical treatment.Results: Power spectral analysis demonstrated a prominent oscillatory activity peak at 2-6 Hz in patients who manifested a clinically overt voice tremor. Voice analysis with support vector machine classifier objectively discriminated with high accuracy between controls and patients who did and did not manifest clinically overt voice tremor and between patients who were and were not under the symptomatic effect of the best medical treatment. Conclusions: In patients with essential tremor, voice tremor is characterized by abnormal oscillatory activity at 2-6 Hz. Voice analysis, including power spectral analysis and support vector machine classification, objectively detected voice tremor and its response to symptomatic pharmacological treatment in patients with essential tremor.

We present a neural associative memory storing gray-scale images. The proposed approach is based on a suitable decomposition of the gray-scale image into gray-coded binary images, stored in brain-state-in-a-box-type binary neural networks. Both learning and recall can be implemented by parallel computation, with time saving. The learning algorithm, used to store the binary images, guarantees asymptotic stability of the stored patterns, low computational cost, and control of the weights precision. Some design examples and computer simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Human maintain their body balance by sensorimotor controls mainly based on information gathered from vision, proprioception and vestibular systems. When there is a lack of information, caused by pathologies, diseases or aging, the subject may fall. In this context, we developed a system to augment information gathering, providing the subject with warning audio-feedback signals related to his/her equilibrium. The system comprises an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a data processing unit, a headphone audio device and a software application. The IMU is a low-weight, small-size wireless instrument that, body-back located between the L2 and L5 lumbar vertebrae, measures the subject's trunk kinematics. The application drives the data processing unit to feeding the headphone with electric signals related to the kinematic measures. Consequently, the user is audio-alerted, via headphone, of his/her own equilibrium, hearing a pleasant sound when in a stable equilibrium, or an increasing bothering sound when in an increasing unstable condition. Tests were conducted on a group of six older subjects (59y-61y, SD = 2.09y) and a group of four young subjects (21y-26y, SD = 2.88y) to underline difference in effectiveness of the system, if any, related to the age of the users. For each subject, standing balance tests were performed in normal or altered conditions, such as, open or closed eyes, and on a solid or foam surface. The system was evaluated in terms of usability, reliability, and effectiveness in improving the subject's balance in all conditions. As a result, the system successfully helped the subjects in reducing the body swaying within 10.65%-65.90%, differences depending on subjects' age and test conditions.

Telemedicine represents a valid aid in rehabilitation process. A remote therapist in a telerehabilitation program could monitor daily motion activity and assign motion-rehabilitation tools on the basis of the fall risk. However, one problem is detection of the fall risk itself. Web-based video-camera images alone do not help the remote assessment of the fall risk using the most commonly used qualitative tests based on visual observation. A novel wearable system to assess fall risk in telerehabilitation has been proposed based on an Inertial Measurement Unit and a medical protocol. It provides a score in four levels (1: no fall risk; 4: major fall risk). The telemedicine tool is integrated to the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) net. Each component of the wearable system has been designed and integrated. Each component in the system has been tested individually and in a closed loop. One subject was monitored in a telemedicine link. The test showed a high degree of acceptance. The tool will be furnished to subjects along with a homecare device for daily routine monitoring of motion activity and could eventually be integrated with other systems designed to monitor other physiological parameters along with different aids and monitoring tools.
