Regulamentadas pelo Conselho Federal de Medicina em 2012, as diretivas antecipadas exprimem os cuidados e tratamentos de saúde que os pacientes desejam receber quando estiverem incapacitados de manifestar a sua vontade. Não obstante o CFM tenha se restringido a legitimar eticamente o registro no prontuário das diretivas comunicadas diretamente ao médico, outras formas de manifestação da vontade têm se apresentado na prática clínica, tais como o uso de tatuagens, colares, pulseiras e até microchips implantados. Em razão do surgimento dessas alternativas de comunicação da vontade, torna-se relevante indagar se as diretivas antecipadas expressas de modo não convencional podem ser consideradas eticamente válidas.
