Gas antisolvent (GAS) expansion of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMFA) solutions with supercritical carbon dioxide was used to produce biologically active powders of insulin. Powders with 90% of the particles smaller than 4 μm and 10% smaller than 1 μm were obtained under all conditions tested when the process was operated continuously, with small liquid droplets sprayed into a flowing supercritical continuum. Slow pressurization of the stagnant protein solution resulted in larger particles. In vivo tests on rats revealed no differences between the biological activity of processed and unprocessed insulin, GAS processing of organic solution appears to be a reliable and effective method for the production of dry, biologically active microparticulate powders of peptides and proteins. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Pilomatricoma should be considered when US or CT shows a well-defined hyperechoic or calcific nodule in subcutaneous fat attached to the skin in children. MR images may be helpful in diagnosis. Pathologic findings are well correlated with imaging findings.

Previously published studies on Kikuchi disease (KD) have frequently addressed the computed tomography (CT) findings in the adult population, however, only a few studies have been reported for the pediatric age group. The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical characteristics and imaging features of KD in children. Fifteen children (2-14 yr) who had a neck CT and pathology diagnosis of KD were included in this study. Clinical features, including the duration of lymphadenopathy and fever, prognosis, and laboratory values, were evaluated. We analyzed the sites, size, and lymph node pattern as seen on their CT scans. The median duration of fever was 10 days. Fourteen patients experienced improvement in their condition, although four of these patients experienced recurrent episodes of KD. All patients had affected cervical nodes at level V. Perinodal infiltrates were observed in the affected cervical nodes in 14 cases (93%), and non-enhancing necrosis was also noted within the affected cervical nodes in 10 cases (63%). In conclusion, the combination of imaging findings in conjunction with clinical findings of KD may help to determine whether or not to perform pathology analysis and follow-up studies.

PTLD in young thoracic transplant recipients involves the lungs and extrathoracic organs, tends to have an early onset, and manifests predominantly in the thorax in lung transplant and heart-lung transplant recipients, as opposed to heart transplant recipients.

Purpose, and Material and Methods: MR findings of 9 surgically proven tubo-ovarian abscesses were analyzed in 8 patients. The images were evaluated for signal intensity characteristics and morphologic appearance of the mass, and presence of secondary changes in adjacent pelvic organs and structures. Results: The signal intensity of the lesions on TI-weighted images was hypointense to the surrounding muscle and myometrium in 5 patients, isointense in 3,and hyperintense in 1. On T2-weighted images the signal intensity was hyperintense (n=6) or heterogeneous (n=3). A thin rim (1-3 mm) with hyperintensity on T1-weighted images was noted in the innermost aspect of the masses. Other findings were ill-defined margin, thickened wall, multiple internal septa, shading and gas collection. "Mesh-like" linear strands were noted in the pelvis in all patients, with involvement of adjacent pelvic organs in 7 and lymphadenopathy in 3. Conclusions: In this limited number of cases MR imaging showed great potential for demonstrating the extent of the disease, characterizing the lesions and making a specific diagnosis.
