Los metales pesados son un grave problema a nivel ambiental debido a sus altos niveles de toxicidad para los organismos con los que interactúen una vez son descargados, para enfrentar este problema se han desarrollado diversos métodos de remoción de estos de los efluentes líquidos. En este trabajo se presentan algunos de ellos, destacando sus virtudes y alcances y se comparan con los bioadsobentes que son adsorbentes no-convencionales que se obtienen de partes de plantas y que no necesariamente deben recibir un tratamiento previo para activarse; sin embargo, su activación mejora su capacidad de adsorción. Se abordan los mecanismos que influyen en el proceso de adsorción, de forma de aclarar las mejores condiciones bajo las cuales actúa. Concluyendo que los bioadsorbentes poseen ventajas sobre los adsorbentes sintéticos con una producción de bajo costo, empleando los residuos agroindustriales que no son aprovechados
